A History of Bird Port as part of The Bird Group of Companies Much of Bird Port s recent success might be put down to the fact that we are privately owned helps us to be both competitive in terms of price, and far more flexible than our competitors. We have the ability to load and unload a wide variety of materials to meet our customers' requirements, the only limitation being the size of the ship with 8,000 tonnes the upper limit for the 225m long 19.8m wide dock. The dock has a flat concrete bottom with a covering of silt and meets with the ordinary requirements of a NAABSA berth (Certificate available on request). But with dock gates - unique on the river - Bird Port has the ability to retain up to 6.2 metres of water depending on tidal conditions. The dock is just part of Bird Port s operation in Newport and the company has spent ?5m on upgrading the whole site since moving in - 15,000 sq metres of warehousing served with three 25-tonne overhead cranes being the most obvious of its additions. The large Paceco Vickers overhead crane is unique to Bird Port and boasts a lifting capability of 43 tonnes which accelerates the loading and discharging of vessels, a factor extremely important to ship owners and customers. Since opening the facility in 1994 the list of products handled by the company has increased to include Steel, Timber, Aggregates and Clay with the customer list growing to include most of the large European and home based steel producers. The ample storage facility offers secure covered warehousing for incoming goods and with over eight hectares of open area, the port provides ideal storage for bulk goods such as aggregates and clay. The facility has increased its handling capability from 100,000 tonnes in 1994 to over 300,000 in 1998/9 and achieved a milestone in 2002 with over 500,000 tonnes handled. The Port handles most ferrous and non-ferrous metals with regular weekly discharges from Spain, Italy and Germany. Products exported include Steel, Bulk materials and machinery. Following the successful launch of the business Bird Port embarked upon a quality assurance route which culminated in the facility being awarded BS EN ISO 9001 - 2000 accreditation, one of only a small number of UK ports to achieve this status. The implementation of a new fully computerized Port Control System enables ISDN direct contact accessibility for customers as well as aiding stock identification and control. Originally the Bell Line Container facility, Bird Port still maintains the capacity to handle container vessels and it is part of our plans to re-introduce this type of facility to Newport. We are actively seeking shipping lines and local businesses which currently operate container services within the European short sea shipping routes to utilize the port and its container handling capabilities as a local center for this specialized operation. The management team was strengthened with the inclusion of Anthony Allen and Clive Davies joining as General and Commercial Manager respectively. They have added strength to the existing team by implementing new procedures and accelerating change. The expanding Welsh economy will assist in the growth of this impressive facility under the guidance of the Bird Group of companies, who have been carrying out business in South Wales for over 75 years.
