In the north of Spain, in the middle point of the Cantabrian sea coast, the Port of Gijon is the ideal gateway to Europe, allowing direct access to the western and centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Gijon is an excellent logistic platform for companies in its hinterland. The A-66 Madrid-Asturias highway and the Cantabrian highway ensure that goods are transported fast to and from the industrial areas of Valladolid, Madrid, the Basque Country, Lisbon and Oporto, among others. The port has all the necessary services and infrastructure for railway transport with a direct connection to the national railway net, RENFE, as well as a TECO station, container terminal, with a daily link to the European combined transport network. The Port of Gijon is the leader in the Spanish dry bulk traffic, the sixth in the general ranking of Spanish ports and the fourth in benefits. It is equipped with the most advanced installations, adequate and suitable for any traffic. The port's container facility is operated by Terminal de Contenedores de Gijon (TGC). The company is part of Grupo TCB which, from its origins in Barcelona, has become a worldwide force in the market with an annual container throughtput in excess of 1.3 million TEU. The terminal is located on the Muelle de La Osa and has a 40.000 m2 stacking yard and 210 m of berthing with 11.5 m draught. One 52 t quayside gantry and a 63 t mobile crane provide the ship to shore hadling capacity. Both cranes are fitted with automatic spreaders. The yard is served by two reach stackers and trailer tractor units. There are currently 20 reefer sockets available. The terminal can guarantee a minimum of 26 moves per hour per crane and the Port Authority has been awarded ISO 9002 certification for container operations. TGC offers its clients a range of complementary services: Part loads. Unrestricted storage for empties. Electronic tracking in conjunction with the shipping line. Door to door service, using the Gijon Dry Ports located in the main industrial areas of Spain. The container terminal is linked to the rail terminal which currently provides a daily service to Madrid/Venta de Banos Dry Port. Maersk offers two regular weekly services to any destination around the world from the Port of Gijon via feeder to and from Algeciras and Rotterdam. Naviera Pinillos and Nenufar Shipping also provide a weekly service to the Canary Island and North Africa with transhipment available at Livorno (Italy). Port of Gijon is home to European Bulk Handling installation (EBHI) a privately managed specialised bulk facility. The fully automated terminal is one of the largest in Europe with an annual throughput in the region of 16 million tons and discharge rates up to 100.000 t per day, making Gijon the leading dry bulk port in Spain. A quay length of 825 m with 58 feet depth alongside allows the simultaneous working of two vessels with a combined capacity of over 500.000 t.. ECHI operates around the clock, 360 days a year and is able to offer its clients electronic real time information on the status of their consigments.. Concern for the environment and significant investments in new technology have placed EBHI at the forefront, of the industry with the incorporation of the latest European R&D projects (LIFE, BAT) in their management process. EBHI can also offer a transhipment service affloading to smaller vessels either directly of using temporary stockpiles on the quasyde - direct transhipment operates at a rate of 2.000 t/h. Three 50 t quasyde cranes backed up by a 50 t mobile crane can either unload to the 350.000 capacity quasyde stockpile or directly to the conveyor system ensuring rapid vessel turnaround. The ro-ro terminal has 11,5 m depth alongside and a mobile 12 m ramp with 70 t loading capacity and the rail terminal is just 50 m away. The expansion works carried out in 2003 provided a total of 260.000 m2 of open storage with a further 5.000 m2 of covered warehousing. The terminal has a total area of 50.000 m2 with 10.500 m2 of covered storage. The quay has 11.5 m depth alongside 580 m of berthing line with on-quay rail access. Four cranes are available with capacities between 12 and 35 t. AGIP The Terminal hadles diesel (1.000 t/h), gasoline (500 t/h) andTHF (350 t/h). Storage capacity is 62.500 m3 with direct rail access. SUPESA and DITECPESA. The asphalt terminal has two discharge facilities with a capacity of 500 t/h and 350 t/h. The following facilities are available for loading and discharge of liquid bulk carriers: Repsol Butano S.A. The terminal can handle LPG at a rate of 100 m3/h: Storage capacity is 44.500 m3 and on-terminal rail loading facilities are available. CLH. There is a jetty for diesel and gasoline (500/800 t/h) and fuel oil (700 t/h). Storage capacity is 120.000 m3 and there is direct rail access. These modern facilities have 789 m of bearthing and a depth of 6 m. The 3.150 m2 available on the quayside is complemented by a service area of 18.350 m2. An ice production plant, cold stores, warehouse and market complete the terminal complex.
