The Port of Santander surpassed 5,400,000 Metric Tons in 2002. That means an increase of good Traffic of 6% compared to the previous year 2001. Now that the year is over, the provisional figures for the traffic in the Port of Santander reached the quantity of 5,400,000 tons, which is 6% more than 2002 and means another historic record for the Port. Since 1998 the Port of Santander has been going through a constant and firm increase, in 1999 it reached for the first time the figure of 5,000,000 tons. The previous record was obtained in 2000, when it obtained 5,261,000 tons,-figures it has just passed by more than 2.5% now. The forecasts for the increase of good traffic for all the Spanish Ports for 2002 was around 4%. If these figures ares confirmed that would mean that the Port of Santander has grown 2% above this value. This will mean the Port of Santander has improved significantly its relative position within the Spanish Port System. This growth is the result of a good port traffic during all the year 2002, especially during the month of May when it handled 700,000 tons. This is so far the record hold in Santander for traffic handled during a single month, the previous record had been reached in July 1999 with 568,000 tons of good handled in the Port.
