The 5,000,000 square metre area dedicated as the host site to Sharjah's contribution the world's free zone Facilities is fast making its mark as a premier choice among investors looking for a place to access global markets. Within weeks of the November 1995 announcement advising the establishment of Hamriyah Free Zone Sharjah (HFZS), the Zone's first investor made a pledge to support Sharjah's initiative. Sharjah Oil Refinery (SOR) leased 325,000 square metres of prime land soon after the release of the Emiri Decree announcing the plans for the worldclass industrial base. Currently, SOR is making great headway in the establishment of its refining facilities. The fruits of the Zone's first crop are in evidence as the state of-the art refinery reaches for the skies and in so doing sketches the beginnings of a skyline belonging to "the new generation of free zones" - a membership HFZS was fast to gain. HFZS management realise that for the Zone and its investors to stride sturdily into the new century, the traditional "offers" of free zone environments - freedom of ownership, duties, exchange controls and taxes - will need to be supported by freedom from red tape, among other value added, service-led support systems. Respecting this, quality time has been invested in paving the way for complementary investors to be "in business" within days of lease contracts being signed. With the service aspect pledged, HFZS will facilitate efficiency in all aspects of the 'Business mix for the Year 2000 and beyond'. The Zone defines the 'mix' as efficiency-driven and three-fold: communications efficiency, IT efficiency, staff efficiency In communications, the reference is to telecommunications as well as to accessibility via quality road ways, global air routes and direct shipping channels. During the first stage, HFZS has worked successfully in developing the base infrastructure ensuring adequate water, power and telecommunications feed. Quality service and access roads link the Sharjah site with world-class road networks connecting neighbouring emirates and Gulf States. While creating global air links has long been a primary objective of Sharjah and the nearby emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and Ras A] Khaimah. Sharjah International Airport services 230 countries via regular passenger and cargo routings. Lufthansa German Airlines, one of the world's largest cargo operators, has based its busy Middle East Cargo Hub - directing more than 200 flights each month - at Sharjah Airport. Dubai International Airport offers hundreds more flight options. And it is Mother Nature who has taken care of the shipping routes Sharjah is strategically located near the tip of the Arabian Peninsula enjoying open water access to the waterways of Europe and the Far East. Sharjah also boasts an east coast and west coast port - the only emirate able to do so giving direct access to global markets via the Gulf and Indian Ocean respectively Information Technology, HFZS believe, is paramount to achieving high levels of success and in gaining the competitive edge. In support of this belief the establishment of a fully networked communications system, enveloping administration, marketing and data base management, is being put in place. It will benefit from constant upgrading as business demands, or as new systems and software are introduced to the marketplace. While on the people front, the Zone set out with the mission of grouping together a solid international management team to service global investors. HFZS has attracted leading professionals to direct every aspect of the operation. All personnel are experienced, service-driven and computer-literature. HFZS respect that time is of the essence for the free zone management team and for investment partners alike. The ultimate objective is positive results all round Thus, with full steam ahead, in compliment to the futuristic structure of SORs refinery, work on SORs dedicated jetty is underway. The 14 metre deep water harbour comfortably accommodates LPG and bulk handling vessels. It gives the crew and their free zone compatriots accessibility to each other, as well as access to "the Freight Bridge" between Europe and the Far East, and the super highway, known as "the Link", that connects the free zone site with the United Arab Emirates' west and east coastlines. The next available facility will be 92 warehouses. The first 400 & 600 square metre warehouse/factory/office units will be ready to occupy during Fall 1997. Flexibility is a word favoured by HFZS management. They believe that current times and economic climates need strategic yet practical directives. Accordingly, flexibility will be administered in dealings with all Zone partners. Discussion that shares investors' individual requirements and identifies the demands of their own business mix will be encouraged, the aim being to provide a service match to suit each investor profile. So, armed with the overriding goal of achieving a three-prong benefit the benefit to the investor (customer); the benefit to Sharjah; and the ultimate benefit to the Nation - HFZS, "the new generation free zone", pledges to nurture a stable, flexible, accessible, quality, integrated and far reaching free zone environment. Hamriyah Map Port Health Health Inspection comes under the jurisdiction of Sharjah Municipality which has set up a special control unit to provide 24-hour inspection services for incoming food products. Consignees are able to clear food consignments quickly through Sharjah ports as having facilities in four locations enables the importer the convenience of clearing at port of entry. All food products entering the UAE must comply to the standards laid down by the Federal Government and regular importers of known-product brands can clear goods direct at their premises. Certain countries and product,, require special attention due to circumstances prevalent in country of origin. Consignments are generally cleared without difficulty and when the Health Inspector requires further tests, facilities of the central health laborator are called into service. These modern laboratories carry out a detailed examination of the food products and determine its fitness for human consumption. Commenting on the services provided by this department the Head of Health Section assures the importer that all efforts are made to ensure food products released to the general public for consumption are safe. The Health Laboratories comply fully to the latest international standards. Many tests are carried out including those for harmful bacteria, contamination due to chemicals and radio-activity. Sharjah and Dubai health sections work closely together to ensure full compliance from the many importers of food items. Details listed on the labels are also checked to determine the contents of certain products as well as Halal Certificates for meat slaughtered under Islamic conditions. Production and expiry dates are also cross checked with the accompanying paperwork to ensure that the shelf-life of consumer items complies fully with the General Secretariat of UAE Municipalities regulations All food items entering the UAE must have a production certificate from the manufacturer together with a health certificate from the country of origin which has been attested by the UAE Embassy in that country.
