Vision Statement "To be a facilitator of integrated port services to enable our customers to be globally competitive whilst adhering to good environmental policies, supporting economic growth and social development in the State of Tasmania." Since corporatisation in 1997, Hobart Ports has targeted specific business opportunities including: international shipping services, stevedoring, cold storage facilities, the fishing industry, cruise ships, Antarctic research; the Hobart International Airport. International vessels that call at the Port of Hobart provide a network of rapid transit services between Australia and Asia - an international freight vessel capable of carrying either breakbulk or containerised cargo calls at Hobart every nine days. Through these services Hobart Ports provides Tasmanian importers and exporters with unparallelled access to markets interstate and overseas. Hobart Ports' stevedoring business, Tasmanian Stevedores, was established in 1998 to stevedore Project Asia Service (PAS) vessels that ship zinc produced at Pasminco Hobart to its major markets in Asia. While Tasmanian Stevedores continues to provide stevedoring services to these vessels, the company has also secured the Australian Antarctic Division stevedoring contract. A new business, Port Adelaide Stevedores, provides container and breakbulk services to PAS vessels that visit Port Adelaide in South Australia. Hobart Ports' other South Australian stevedoring company, Port Pirie Stevedores, loads vessels with zinc and bulk concentrates from the Broken Hill operation of Western Australia-based Perilya Mining. Hobart's Fish Handling and Distribution Centre handles all deep sea and market fish landed at the Port in one centralised unloading facility. The centre receives large or small quantities of fish for processing under strict quality controls before being dispatched to markets or transferred to the nearby Hobart Ports Cold Storage Centre. The Centre provides essential services to Tasmania's salmon producers, as well as a full storage and order pick service for various retail customers. Importantly, it played a pivotal role in assisting Tasmanian apple growers to gain access to the Japanese market for their Fuji apples. The centre meets the strict protocol requirements of the Japanese Ministry for Agriculture, Forests and Fisheries The Port of Hobart is now widely regarded as a first-class destination for cruise ships. Hobart Ports, a member of the Cruise Tasmania consortium of ports, operates a 'meet and greet' program that has been well received by cruise ship management, passengers and crew. Hobart is also an important base for Antarctic supply and Southern Ocean scientific research. Apart from its geographic location, Hobart's infrastructure and its established reputation as a centre for Antarctic research make it the ideal destination for supply and research vessels to lay up for maintenance, crew recreation and changeover. Complementing its transport activities on Hobart's waterfront, Hobart Ports is the majority shareholder in the company that holds the long-term lease to manage the Hobart International Airport. CAPITAL PORT A History of the Marine Board of Hobart 1858-1997 'Capital Port' for the first time tells the story of the Marine Board of Hobart from the end of the convict era until 1997. Its rich, full record is an absorbing part of the history of the capital city and of the south of Tasmania. This book details the development of the port as the Board's innovative engineers responded to the changing technology of shipping, and its nine wardens, from whaleship owners to modern accountants, met the challenges of fluctuating economic fortunes in the south of the island state. Copies of the book can be purchased from the Receptionist, Hobart Ports Corporation, Level 8, Marine Board Building, No. 1 Franklin Wharf Hobart.
