Its coordinates are 34 29 South latitude and 57 49 West longitude. It is the second most important port in Uruguay, after Montevideo, in terms of facilities and traffic. The main traffic at this port consists of daily line frequencies carried out by different shipping companies transporting passengers and vehicles to and from Montevideo and Buenos Aires, via Ro-Ro ferries. Colonia has a free zone, "Free zone of Colonia", and has a population of over 115,000 inhabitants. It is a preferred tourist destination and also an entry point for tourists to and from Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Punta del Este.
