Over more than 150 years the University of Antwerp and the academic institutions which preceded it have built up plenty of expertise in the fields of transport and maritime management. As the University of Antwerp wanted to make this expertise available by means of a high-quality educational programme, the Institute of Transport and Maritime Management Antwerp (ITMMA) has been founded in 1996. Since the world of transport and maritime activities is constantly developing - and today even more so than ever before - it obviously needs thoroughly trained managers. To answer this need, in October 1996 the institute launched a postgraduate academic programme which is now called the M.Sc. in Transport and Maritime Management. The main objective of the programme is to help executive staff members become top executives who are able to cope with the challenges of the international, competitive market. To this end, this particular master s programme offers a unique combination of general transport issues on the one hand and specific maritime matters on the other. As such, it fills a gap in the field of postgraduate academic programmes. Its courses deal with a vast number of topics ranging from transport in the strict sense of the word to strategic management. Thanks to the enthusiastic collaboration of a number of transport companies, the programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience. As such, the students are able to confront theory with real life by means of case studies. In short, this Master s constitutes the node of academic rigour and practical assessment. Many of the staff of the Institute, in the course of their work, have developed international reputations for teaching and research and regularly make contributions to the work of such organizations as the World Bank, the European Commission, UNCTAD and so on. The year 2002 has marked the successful launch of the new M.Sc. in Transport and Maritime Economics, a doctoral programme in fact, leading to a Ph.D. in Transport and Maritime Economics. The aim of this programme is to provide a high-quality purposive scientific training that is needed to do scientific research in the field of transport economics and maritime management. ITMMA has also set up various forms of co-operation with internationally renowned universities and institutions. In this way, the students can benefit from the large number of international contacts the University of Antwerp has established over the years. Moreover, they can also profit on a more personal level as they are part of international groups of students. With regard to the encouragement of international dialogue, ITMMA has successfully organized, and will continue to organize, a number of major international trend-setting events, conferences, symposia and seminars, such as the Maritime and Port Symposium ITMMAPS, held in Antwerp in April 2002, thus offering top-level executives, policymakers and academics working in transport, maritime industry and logistics international forums for exchanging know-how and experience regarding the latest trends in the industry. Finally, I would like to add that ITMMA will keep on providing policy-related research and consultancy for public authorities and private enterprises through its Research and Projects Department. Needless to say that we would be most pleased to welcome you to ITMMA. To develop each student s potential, ITMMA has created an exiting environment for teaching and learning, small classes to ensure individual attention, and a system of support services. Discover the rich product portfolio of the Institute through this website. Prof. Dr. Francis Van Loon Growth in world trade has triggered off a surge of relentless, unremitting changes in the port industry. Ports are being expanded in a tearing rush. New ports are being constructed, new port lay-outs are being developed. Inland and coastal infrastructure developments come about in rapid succession. The result is an explosion of news, information and developments with regard to port and shipping technology and management, just to name a few. If you are one of the many thousand decision makers involved in the worldwide maritime industry, I will not have to explain you how important it is to keep a close track of all the latest information and developments. In a global business environment marked by constant and rapidly accelerating change, managing the information technology, as well as the movements of products and people, therefore calls for a powerful blend of operational, managerial and strategic skills. Here at the Institute of Transport and Maritime Management Antwerp, we try to develop those skills. At ITMMA, we do our utmost to give our students a competitive edge in markets ranging from Antwerp to New Zealand. In-depth coverage of key subjects such as Advanced Maritime Economics, Advanced Port Economics, Integrated Logistics, Strategic Management Tools, Terminal Management and Hinterland Transportation should provide the much needed, highly qualified and professionally competent international business executive. In our eight-month full-time M.Sc. programme in Transport and Maritime Management for instance, we not only try to give the students access to the latest concepts and strategies with regard to transport in the strict sense of the word and strategic maritime management, but we also try to equip them with the managerial skills to transform that knowledge into practical business results. Therefore, I am quite confident of the fact that our graduates will make an excellent impression on leaders of the international business community. Managing the transfer of today's knowledge or up-to-date information - i.e. bringing it in from outside and passing it on to the students in a clear, accessible way - is not an easy task to perform. Fortunately, for bringing the outside inside and the inside back outside, we can count on a top-class team, an A-team if I may say so, with high academic teaching standards, a team which has strong links with commerce and industry, a team which has a keen awareness of changing business needs. Our students will not deny that we make high demands on their competence. The same goes for the complete teaching staff however. They have to meet stringent requirements too. We want them to act as sponges or magnets, absorbing or attracting the latest information or data, carefully processing it and finally handing it on. Our lecturers have to carry the label 'premium blend' or 'satisfaction guaranteed'. To put it briefly, they have to be aces. ITMMA students can therefore be confident of the academically first rate education, which is relevant to the practical needs of business. I am sure that it will certainly increase their career possibilities in the transport industry. In short, ITMMA provides education with a capital E. In all fairness I have to add that we, i.e. the teaching staff, learn a great deal from the students. The melting pot of different nationalities and cultures after all contains a huge cargo of invaluable knowledge. Therefore, it is also important that their knowledge is being tested against ours and visa versa. Since we do have one of the world's premier seaports in our backyard, since we do have an enthusiastic team of professors and lecturers who have found one another and who have sound ideas about port and maritime business, who are driven by the will to stay at the top, who want to keep the flag at the masthead so to speak, ... I can assure you that ITMMA will never settle for second best. Prof. Dr. Willy Winkelmans ITMMA is a faculty of the University of Antwerp and, consequently, has access to a global academic and industrial network. ITMMA is rapidly acquiring a leading position in the fields of transport economics, including maritime transport economics, port economics and logistics and is committed to maintaining and building on its excellent reputation among key players in the maritime, port and transport industries. Students joining ITMMA's interactive programmes will benefit from highly specialized instruction and intercultural training as well as from opportunities for international networking. ITMMA's departments (Education & Training, Research & Projects, Events & Conferences) can boast a research and professorial team with a proven track record in the field. The strength of the team lies not only in its impressive academic credentials, its extensive field research and wide-ranging empirical knowledge, but also in its ability to put the (emerging) global and multicultural know-how into real terms. ITMMA therefore highly values its faculty and staff who have committed their talents and careers to advance its mission. ITMMA pledges to support their work, to encourage their professional development, to evaluate their professional performance and to compensate them at nationally competitive levels. In short, ITMMA constitutes the node of academic rigour and practical assessment, thus generating the value-added touch . Vision Statement ITMMA will be Europe s premier supplier of highly specialized academic and practice-based maritime and logistics education with a one-stop shopping approach encompassing a frontiers of knowledge policy: M.Sc. programmes, Ph.D. programme, short-term specialized and tailor-made post-experience programmes, publications, trend-setting events and conferences, and research and consulting through strong alliances with excellent universities and leading international private companies and public organizations. The Research and Projects' Department The Research and Projects Department aims to develop high-level academic research in the field of transport and maritime economics in order to stimulate business growth and to support policy formulation in the transport industry, regionally, nationally and transnationally, hence increasing the value extracted from academic research.
