"In an industry where the longevity of member companies is often measured in months rather than years, the last years of OHSI s second decade have been interesting ones to say the least. These years included award of by the US Coast Guard of the largest contract in the company s history, a short-lived merger with, and eventual buy-back from a much larger company, and the retirement of a founding principal. Fortunately for Odom, an unwavering dedication to the principals of customer service, product innovation, and continuity of management and senior staff has seen the company through both good times and bad. Today Odom is poised to introduce a number of new and innovative products, as well as to take advantage of the experience gained while surviving and even prospering through nearly two decades." With almost two thousand units in service worldwide, Odom Hydrographic Systems, Inc. located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana has established an enviable standard for product reliability and customer service in the survey marketplace. This by no means should indicate the company is resting on its laurels. Examples of Odom s continuing drive to lead the echo sounder market is its exceptional shallow water technology , and the highly acclaimed capabilities of the new Echotrac MKIII. Responding to customer requirements for a sounder capable of achieving accurate continuous records in very shallow water, OHSI has developed a Shallow Water Option as an enhanced feature for their existing sounders. Remarkably, soundings can be accomplished in depths as shallow as 10cm (4 ) without inhibiting deeper water operation in any way. The new technology is a combination of transducer design and transmit/receive techniques not previously available in a digital survey quality sounder. According to Richard Byrd, President of OHSI, The Shallow Water Option addition to our products has been enthusiastically received by our customers, particularly those working in coastal environments . Complete small boat shallow water system being fitted at OHSI TOP Equipment aboard these shallow water vessels can be exposed to some particularly harsh environments. Typically small open boats, rafts, and even airboats are used for some of the coastal plains surveys. A customer in Nicaragua went so far as to order an entire boat (in this case a small Bateau or John Boat ) from Odom complete with DGPS, data acquisition computer, Hypack MAX and Hydrotrac with the shallow water option. Odom was able to deliver a turnkey system (by air freight) complete with training in the actual work area. In these difficult survey conditions, Odom s reputation for product integrity and support, from acquiring the data through to final processing, is especially critical. The quality control standards established by OHSI insure each unit has undergone and passed some of the most rigorous criteria in the industry. That knowledge together with an earned reputation for exceptional customer support provides the end user with a high confidence factor in the success of his survey. In line with the current trend for more data in an effective, easier to use, and archival format, the company s next generation of single beam sounders, the Echotrac MKIII encompasses some genuinely unique new approaches to data acquisition and handling, without compromising the essential accuracy and dependability requirements of hydrographic surveys. The MKIII incorporates some impressive data presentation and handling features, as well as practical innovations such as frequency agile transceivers. The capability of fine-tuning the transmit/receive function from the unit s front panel can make the difference between being able to utilize an existing transducer and having to fit a new one. This immense advantage means a visit to the shipyard can be avoided. TOP Echotrac MKIII -Thermal Chart Shown A color LCD that is fully interchangeable with the standard thermal paper recorder is also available. In a large number of the surveys currently conducted, the acquired data is recorded for post processing and alternate presentation methods, leaving the paper echogram as simply a marginal record keeping medium and often a burden to store. In the MKIII E (LCD model) the full digitized record of each sounding can be stored internally on an up to 2GB Flash Memory Card for transfer to alternate medium for archiving or further processing. Alternatively, the same data can be stored on a host computer utilizing the 10BaseT LAN connection. The LAN port and four serial ports provide flexible and effective I/O capability. The MKIII carries on the Odom tradition of useable technology while continuing to offer record annotation and GPS interfacing via the simple scheme of setup menus so popular with users of the MKII. TOP We can outfit your vessel too! OHSI hasn t limited itself to single beam echo sounders. While maintaining a leading position in that particular technology, the company has a very successful multibeam sounder, the Echoscan to its credit. As with other Odom products, the Echoscan contains excellent technology in a robust, reliable, and easy to use package. The advanced transducer material (PVDF) employed in the unit s design allows for increased sensitivity while limiting noise, is not susceptible to adjacent channel side lobe interference, and offers a significant reduction in cost to the user. The Echoscan has a proven accuracy to 2.5cm and has been accepted by the US Army Corps of Engineers for dredging payment determination. In order to facilitate customer requirements, Odom has formed affiliations with several software developers and hardware manufacturers and offers a complete line of marine survey instruments, including a special purpose designed survey launch with automated transducer deployment and noise reduction mechanical systems. TOP The Echotrac, Hydrotrac, and Echoscan offer single channel Side Scan Sonar options. The company can also provide additional wide swath multibeam systems, side scan sonar, and sub-bottom profiling tools available from partnering companies in order to offer the customer a complete survey package. Custom-built survey systems have also come from the Baton Rouge plant to meet unique requirements from Hong Kong and Peru to Alaska and the Panama Canal. Odom Hydrographic Systems has been a mainstay in the survey industry for nearly twenty years and has the customer commitment, technical knowledge, and vision to continue to lead the survey industry well into the future. As stated by the company s newly elected Vice President, Stephen Apsey "Odom Hydrographic Systems will continue its commitment to our customers service and needs. Look to the future to bring a full line of echo sounders aimed at Offshore Service Vessels and other navigation applications. These products will have the same qualities that have made us the leader in the survey industry."
