WAVE aims to contribute to the development of traffic and regional society by conducting comprehensive and scientific studies and research on port/harbor technology related to planning, design methods, etc., necessary to improve port/harbor areas and enhance port/harbor environments, and by forming integrated port/harbor areas that are harmonized with the environment through diffusion of the results of said studies and research. October 31, 1987 Established as the "Waterfront Revitalization Research Center" April 1, 1996 "Port and Marine Environment Research Institute" and "Environmental Research Department" established April 1, 2000 "Environmental ISO Research Department" established December 25, 2000 Name changed to the "Waterfront Vitalization and Environment Research Center" April 1, 2001 "Information Research Department" established March 1, 2003 Dr.Hideo Nakamura assumed post of Chairman May 27, 2003 "Planning Department" established (reorganization) WAVE supplies data and conducts independent research by holding lecture meetings, workshops, and forums in its work to build interaction networks. WAVE also builds networks that include port and harbor personnel, people involved in the development and use of waterfront areas, and people who are contributing to the creation and preservation of port/harbor and ocean areas. In this way, WAVE is stimulating coastal regions?|and particularly ports and harbors?|while at the same time promoting the creation of port/harbor and ocean environments. In connection with work to stimulate ports, harbors, and other coastal regions as well as the creation of port/harbor and ocean environments, WAVE is commissioned by national and regional bodies to conduct studies and research on polices that should be implemented in response to changes in the conditions surrounding ports and harbors, and on plans related to the development and preservation of individual port and harbor areas. Also, since FY1999, WAVE has been operating Port/Harbor EDI Systems.
