Welcome to this humble web-site, ethereally representing the unpretentious epicentre of south-west Victoria s commercial maritime consulting and surveying services, not to mention the multitude, nay plethora, of other core and fringe services available collectively only from yours truly. There's been a few ships passing the breakwater in the last two years, and the "Portland" part of the business has spread its wings and also now encompasses Australia (well, the south-east so far, from Adelaide to Melbourne to Sydney), so please don't be disappointed if the link was to "Australian Maritime Consulting and Surveys". The locals are a sensitive bunch, and I wouldn't want to disappoint them by neglect or disassociation. Whether in the backwaters of Portland, or Australia wide, the service and expertise is exemplary By the same token, because AMCS' corporate headquarters are not in downtown Sydney or Melbourne means you'll get excellent value, whilst I continue to inhale fresh sea air and live a stress free life, albeit wet and windy, on a daily basis! To clarify, the word Homo in the above motto top left, refers to the Latin for man - at least I hope so!! It was translated from the English Jack of all trades. Master of one . I trust it is in fact correct, as I paid hard-earned cash (non tax-deductible) for the translation service. Latin scholars out there, please advise me if it implies otherwise. There was the option to use "Johannes" (Latin for "Jack"), in lieu of "Homo", but it lacked a certain, I don't know, je ne sais quoi? Anyway, as a brief personal introduction, I hail from a family of seafarers, leastwise on my mother's side. Elementary education was successfully concluded at the Hull Trinity House, a British pre-sea school of (non-scandalous) renown, and my having decided at around nine years of age, when an African sailor threw a weighted heaving line at me, that I would somehow circumnavigate the globe. (And I did, westwards, on my maiden voyage, then eastwards a few years later). In between, I circumnavigated the U.K. on a push-bike. Strictly speaking, under-age at 16yrs & 4mths, I commenced a four year cadetship with Andrew Weir (The Bank Line). It was considered that there was no company finer for an introduction to a sea-going career, at the tail-end of those halcyon days, where sticks and strings (derricks) were still commonplace, containers were still in their infancy, every finger was a marlin spike, and every ship was a hardship. All cadets would emerge as a qualified bilge rat, if not a qualified officer. (In days of old, when sailors were bold, and women weren't invented, they drilled great holes in wooden poles, and they were quite contented) The balance of my sea-going career has been pretty varied since then, to say the least. The last fifteen years principally working my way up to Master on handy-size (150m length / 25,000mt) through to cape-size (290m / 190,000mt) bulk carriers, prior to eventually swallowing the anchor and coming ashore as a pilot / assistant marine manager / deputy harbour master here in the meteorologically microcosmically Portland, Vic. As an indication of my unwaivering consanguinity for a life at sea, I attended college for Chief Mate, then Master, entirely at my own expense, without any salary (costing me, in all, about A$100,000).
