Any attempt of making a film on the history of the WAECO company would inevitably result in a road movie". Starring: two brothers named Theodor and Peter Wahning in search of efficient cooling appliances for their water sports activities. The fact that there was no appropriate technology available in the market led to the founding of WAECO in 1974. In those early days, mobile cooling was the only on-board activity. But the journey continued, and more related products were added stage by stage. Mobile cooling In the early seventies, is was virtually impossible on board a sailing vessel or motor boat to keep food and beverages truly cool and fresh over a longer period of time. The Wahning brothers, at the time in the midst of their university studies, were fully aware of this fact and determined to find a technical solution to the problem. It didn't take long and they presented the first refrigerator with a hermetically sealed cooling cycle working on a battery powered compressor a sensation in the market. The young enterprise had carved out its niche and, at the same time, laid the foundation stone for what is now the world's most comprehensive range of cooling products for mobile applications. WAECO's proprietary brands, COOLMATIC, TROPICOOL, COOLY and COOLFUN, have been well established in the market for many years now, and the company itself enjoys an excellent reputation, an image of competence. Not only with end-users, many renowned manufacturers of cars, trucks, motor homes, yachts and boats have also come to appreciate WAECO as an experienced supplier of series and custom-made products. Electronic accessories Mobile cooling appliances need mobile energy . More often than not, the mobile energy required for refrigeration is provided by batteries, which must be handled as sparingly as possible. With all this in mind, WAECO has developed a wide array of electronic accessories in parallel to its growing range of mobile cooling appliances. Most of the products bearing the MOBITRONIC label have been designed to provide maximum user comfort on board, while saving the vehicle battery as much as possible. Others help mobile consumers widen their scope of action. The range of electronic accessories includes mains units and battery chargers, DC/AC converters, voltage dividers, voltage converters as well as a variety of products for professional battery care. Mobile kitchen equipment Doing the small step from mobile cooling to mobile kitchen equipment was just logical progression for WAECO. When sounding out the potential of the new market segment, the company discovered a tremendous demand initially, among yacht and boat owners, later on, also with truckers, campers and motor home enthusiasts. As a result, MOBITHERM mobile kitchen appliances were launched in the early 90's, all of them tailor-made to suit the needs of mobile use. Today, the programme leaves nothing to be desired, ranging from mobile microwave ovens and mini ovens right through to coffee makers and car kettles. Retrofit air-conditioning systems and spare parts Vehicle air-conditioning, to put it straight and simple, means to generate cold under mobile conditions. WAECO recognised the affinity to its existing business lines early on. The outcome: WAECO forged a partnership with DIAVIA SPA in 1981. At the time, the Italian company already ranked among the world's leading manufacturers of retrofit air-conditioning systems. Today, it forms part of Delphi Automotive Systems, one of the largest suppliers to the automotive industry. In close cooperation, the German-Italian duo successively developed the European retrofit market. Starting in Germany, a network of service partners was put in place and continuously expanded to cover the whole of Europe. Training programmes were organised to provide the partners with appropriate specialist know-how. Arrived at the top of the retrofit air-conditioning market, WAECO was again heading for new horizons. Before long, new products were added to the range, including complete solutions for motor garages, spare parts in original equipment quality, and consumables. In the meantime, the demand for air-conditioning services has grown dramatically, fuelled by the ever increasing number of vehicles with factory fitted air-conditioning systems. As a result, motor garages today appreciate WAECO in the first place as a highly competent supplier of air-conditioning spare parts. One who is able to deliver at short notice through a perfect wholesale and logistic network. Automotive accessories and reversing video systems While working on retrofit air-conditioning systems, WAECO discovered many new opportunities of how shortcomings in safety and comfort would be easily removed by means of retrofit automotive accessories. As a result, the magic programme was borne. Specifically designed for cars and motor homes, the range encompasses a variety of retrofit accessories for enhanced safety and comfort. Whether central locking, power window, reversing sensor or car alarm most of the products are suitable for DIY installation. Though part of the range, the reversing video systems product line has meanwhile attained a quasi-independent status. WAECO distributes these products with great success from the position of a market leader. Reversing video systems are used mainly in utility vehicles and mobile homes. Customers can choose from a wide and truly professional range of models offered under the MOBITRONIC brand. And there's no end to it ... After more than twenty-five years, WAECO is still on the move. After all, we are in a genuine "road movie", a never ending story, that is. Meanwhile, the "shooting" takes place on locations throughout Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia, and the crew has grown to almost 1,300 dedicated employees who share the passion of moving forward, stage by stage...
