The Global Positioning System (GPS) operated by the US Government was originally developed for military purposes. The system provides users with a horizontal position accuracy of about 10-15 metres. Over the past few years , the civilian community has adopted GPS for such widespread application that it is now universally accepted as a standard positioning and navigation tool. A key factor driving the increased utilisation of the system has been the availability of GPS augmentation systems which improve dramatically on the "stand-alone" accuracy of the system. OmniSTAR is part of the Fugro group and the company was among the pioneers of satellite based positioning systems and technology. In 1986, Fugro's US subsiadiary ,John E Chance, introduced the world's first precise satellite based positioning system , with a 24 hour/day operational capability. When GPS became operationally available some years later , the company applied its expertise in satellite and positioning technology to develop GPS augmentation systems capable of delivering sub-meter position accuracy , in real time , on a near world-wide basis. Such augmentation systems are generally known as Differential GPS (DGPS). OmniSTAR's DGPS ground infrastructure comprises about 80 reference stations, a world-wide communications network and three permanently manned control centres in the USA , Europe and Australia. The function of the reference stations is to determine the inherent system errors in the GPS system and thereby , the corrections which need to be applied to any GPS observation. Data from each reference station is forwarded continuously to one or more of the three control centres where it is validated and then broadcast , via a constellation of geostationary satellites, to mobile users world-wide. By inputting this correction data into a remote GPS receiver , its horizontal positioning performance can be improved to a sub-metre level when the user has a suitable GPS contellation in view. OmniSTAR operate a number of DGPS augmentation services , each tailored to the needs of specific market segments. The system is characterised by the portability of its receiving equipment , suitable for vehicle mounting or "backpack" use.
