PACECO s BufferStation Will Serve as a Platform for Cargo Inspection and Inventory Systems JANUARY 2003 INVENTORY MANAGEMENT Container Code Reader RFID Seal/Tag Reader Visual Damage Check Link to Yard Inventory Systems CARGO INSPECTION Content Verification Passive Detection Equipment Active Scanning Equipment TM BUFFERSTATION In recent months, ports throughout the world have been struggling to enhance container security. Analysts have recognized that the container transport system is highly vulnerable to abuse, and are urging ports to improve security measures. Unfortunately, shipping lines and terminal operators are facing many challenges to achieve container security. Current security measures are highly costly, and may have detrimental effects to port productivity and service quality. PACECO Corp's BufferStation will allow ports to integrate these security measures without productivity losses. The BufferStation provides an intermediate buffer between the Quay Crane operation and the terminal truck operation. This buffer provides ports an ideal position to use inspection and inventory systems. Containers temporarily rest on the BufferStation s platform, allowing inspection of all containers with methods such as passive or active, non-intrusive inspection. Additionally, the BufferStation can incorporate container identification and inventory tracking equipment. WHAT IT IS The BufferStation essentially adds a buffer landing platform and a second hoist to conventional quay cranes. The structure consists of a raised buffer platform and a hoist trolley. The entire structure rests on truck tires underneath the quay crane so that the quay crane can deposit or retrieve containers on the buffer platform. CONTAINER INSPECTION Governments are recognizing that there is a great need to inspect container contents in order to insure security. Unfortunately, ports are having a difficult time adopting these devices without hindering port productivity. The BufferStation will provide an ideal location to perform container inspection to search for all types of illicit cargo, including: Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Weapons Explosives Narcotics Contraband Articles RFID TAG COMMUNICATION RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) seals and tags are becoming a viable option to maintain cargo security as well as inventory. RFID tags can record instances where unauthorized people tamper with a container or its contents. The BufferStation provides a central location for RFID communication devices. Every container loaded to and from the ship will pass through the BufferStation, allowing ports to centralize their RFID equipment. THE BUFFERSTATION: A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION Cargo security enhancement is only one of the benefits of the BufferStation. Additionally, the BufferStation will improve on the following areas of operation: PACECO CORP MAIN OFFICE: 3854 Bay Center Place Hayward, CA 94545, USA Phone: (510) 264-9288 Fax: (510) 264-9280 E-mail: pt@pacecocorp.com REGIONAL OFFICE: 3064 C Bienville Blvd. Ocean Springs, MS 39564, USA Phone: (228) 872-1733 Fax: (228) 875-8875 E-mail: pacecocorp@datasync.com PACECO , Portainer , Transtainer , Supertainer , and Shipstainer are registered trade names and trademarks of PACECO Corp. Productivity: The BufferStation improves quayside productivity by separating the Quay Crane and terminal truck operations, thereby improving operating efficiency. The machine will reduce chassis congestion by allowing more lanes for terminal trucks. 2. Inventory Management Terminal operators can also integrate inventory management systems onto the BufferStation. The BufferStation platform is a reliable location to perform Container Code Reading and RFID Seal/Tag communication. These systems can be linked to Yard Inventory Systems. 3. Resource Management The BufferStation is a mobile, versatile machine that can be easily moved between different locations. Therefore, ports can move the BufferStation from idling areas to locations where they would be the most beneficial. Due to this, ports can use a fleet of BufferStations with the most effectiveness and efficiency. For further information, please contact PACECO CORP offices.
