Forth Ports PLC has made substantial investment in the Port of Methil on the northern shores of the First of Forth. Details The Port, which has two working docks able to take vessels up to 3,000 dwt, installed a 10-tonne capacity grabbing crane in 1996 to speed up the discharge of fertilisers and other bulk commodities. Dry Bulk The Port specialises as a woodpulp and timber distribution centre. These two commodities contribute most of its traffic, totalling almost 150,00 tonnes a year. Fertiliser imports, road salt in winter for Fife Council and export stone and coal are further commodities handled through the Port. Fertilisers The fertilisers, mostly from Holland and Scandinavia, go into a shed in the dock area owned by Carrs Fertilisers where it is blended to different requirements, bagged, palletised and distributed to local farms. Storage The Port operates a 12,000 sq. ft pick-and-pack shed for one of its long-established supporters, timber importers James Donaldson & Son. A similar set-up is operated on three acres of open storage space by another importer, Boras Timber of Sweden, which ships in timber from Sweden, Finland and Latvia. Methil still has considerable storage areas available for companies which can take advantage of the Port's geographical location and services to serve that part of Scotland.
