Each is equipped with the latest dredging and discharge equipment and utilises satellite-guided technology, accurate to within five metres, to achieve precise location of aggregate resources. City of Cardiff and City of Chichester These sister ships were built at the Appledore yard in Devon and commissioned in 1997, representing a total investment of ?19 million. They replaced four ships which had previously worked off the South Coast and in the Bristol Channel and were designed to meet the particular constraints of small wharves and shallow draughts. Capable of two trips in a typical day, the Cardiff and Chichester can load and discharge a full cargo of 2,300 tonnes of sand or gravel in under three hours. To view discharge equipment diagrams click here City of London and City of Westminster The City of London and its sister ship the City of Westminster were built at Appledore and commissioned in 1990, involving an investment of ?17 million. While involved also in beach replenishment work and in deliveries to customers on the continent, their principal role is to supply UMA's two million-tonne per year capacity processing plant at Greenwich as well as other plants at Erith and Ridham, all of which serve customers over a wide area of London and the South East. Designed for typical passages of eight to ten hours in order to reach dredging grounds in the North Sea, the City of London has a cargo capacity of 4,800 tonnes while the City of Westminster can deliver 5,200 tonnes. Both can load and discharge in three hours.
