As the fifth largest port in the UK, and set in the heart of the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain, Milford Haven Port Authority is responsible for the biggest port in Wales, and one of the most prominent on the West Coast. Milford Haven is a trust port- an independent, commercially run organisation, and as a result, the Authority has a statutory responsibility to both Government and its stakeholders, and is required to reinvest all profits to the benefit of the latter. The Authority provides port, harbour and associated services through its commercial arm, The Milford Docks Company. These include, wharfage, stevedoring, support to the fishing industry, ship repair, waterside services, marine and leisure facilities and provision and operation of the Pembroke Dock Ferry Terminal used by Irish Ferries. A further subsidiary, D V Howells, provides national and international oil pollution clearance and training services. MARINERS ARE HEREBY ADVISED that... > More The Milford Haven Port Authority (formerly the Milford Haven Conservancy Board) is a public trust port authority set up as an independent statutory body by Act of Parliament in 1958. Its general duty is to promote and protect both local and national interests in the development of the Haven for the public benefit. In particular, it serves the navigational needs of three major oil refineries in the Haven. The basic objectives of the business are largely determined by statute. The relevant extracts from the Milford Haven Conservancy Act 1983 are:- 5-1 The Board shall be charged with the duty of taking such steps as they may consider necessary or expedient: to maintain, improve, protect and regulate the navigation, and in particular the deep water facilities, in the Haven, and to prevent or reduce the discharge of oil, or the risk of discharge of oil into the waters from vessels in the Haven: and To provide, maintain, operate and improve port and harbour services and facilities in, or in the vicinity of, the Haven: and without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing the Board may: Turn their resources to account so far as not required for the purpose of their duties under this section: and Do all other things which in their opinion are expedient to facilitate the proper carrying out of port and harbour services and facilities in, or in the vicinity of, the Haven or development of the Haven. In formulating, or considering any proposal relating to their functions, and in discharging any of their functions, the Board shall have regard to the desirability of: preserving natural beauty. conserving flora, fauna and geological or physiographical features of special interest: and ensuring an easy passage at all times through the waters of the Haven for ascending salmon and sea trout.
