Perhaps appropriately, yet another named system is now churning in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Epsilon, located 1,170km east of Bermuda with winds of 85km/hr. "I'd like to foretell that next year will be calmer, but I can't," commented National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration administrator Conrad Lautenbacher. With 13 hurricanes and 26 named storms, the record-shattering 2005 season had significant consequences for shipping. Product carriers experienced a boom bringing gasoline from Europe to the US, crude tanker capacity was constricted by Rita-related scheduling delays in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean cruise itineraries were frequently disrupted, with complications continuing from Wilma's dock damage in Cozumel. Katrina/Rita impact on US energy infrastructure continues: 804,000 bpd of refining capacity remains offline, compared with a post-Rita peak of 4M bpd, with 37% of Gulf oil production and 30% of gas production still shut-in. Perhaps appropriately, yet another named system is now churning in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Epsilon, located 1,170km east of Bermuda with winds of 85km/hr. Product carriers experienced a boom bringing gasoline from Europe to the US, crude tanker capacity was constricted by Rita-related scheduling delays in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean cruise itineraries were frequently disrupted, with complications continuing from Wilma's dock damage in Cozumel. Katrina/Rita impact on US energy infrastructure continues: 804,000 bpd of refining capacity remains offline, compared with a post-Rita peak of 4M bpd, with 37% of Gulf oil production and 30% of gas production still shut-in. Fairplay magazine s publisher John Prime accepted a distinguished service award at the institute s 26th annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner for Fairplay s commitment to high-quality journalism in covering the maritime workplace. We were honoured to share the limelight with other award recipients, including US naval architect Dr John McMullen, who received a lifetime achievement award. Transportation Security Administration administrator and former Coast Guard commandant Admiral James Loy and SCI board member Grace Allen were Silver Bell recipients. A surprise presentation for US maritime luminary Richard du Moulin and Richard Wilson acknowledged their recent, record-breaking voyage from Hong Kong to New York. Admiral Loy praised Fairplay "for its marvellous integrity and for doing what is right", after its team of reporters published a series of articles that exposed and then closed the Al Najat Marine cruise recruitment scam that had conned more than 125,000 people in developing countries. But the evening s winners weren t any of us who received awards. The winners were the hundreds of thousands of seafarers whose lives are touched by the SCI s wide-reaching programmes that offer training, ship visiting and advocacy services under its mission to provide hospitality, protect the unprotected and empower the weak. It was through the SCI s work that Fairplay first learned of the disgraceful Al Najat scam.
