FAQs Get an Estimate Tracking Contact Us Learn More... Container Rates and Payment Shipping your household goods in fully protected steel-constructed ocean containers is the proven method to safeguard your valued belongings during ocean transit. Our rates are calculated on a per-container basis. Price depends on the overall length of the ocean container you choose and the type of service you select. Matson offers three types of service: door to door, door to port and port to port. Door to Door Matson can arrange for a container to be dropped off at your home or business, picked up when you have finished packing the container and delivered to your new location. With this service we plan the trucking and ocean transit for you. All you have to do is pack your valuables in the container Door to Port Matson can manage your ocean transit and arrange for trucking on one side of the move (i.e. Mainland, Hawaii or Guam ). All you do is pack your container and arrange for trucking to or from the port on the other side of the move Port to Port If you plan to arrange your own trucking to and from the ports, Matson will manage the ocean transit part of your move between the mainland and Hawaii. Matson affords you the opportunity to ship your personal auto or boat with your household goods in the same container, or if you choose, you may deliver your vehicle directly to our port facility. Shipping your boat or vehicle in your household goods container may require an additional charge. To obtain more information about port to port service for your vehicle click here . To obtain a free estimate for your move fill out our request-an-estimate form or call our customer service representative at 1 888 5-matson Our customer service representatives can take your credit card payment over the phone or you can mail your payment to Matson Navigation Accounts Receivable at 4605 E. Elwood Street, Phoenix Arizona 85040, Suite 600. Payments are also accepted at the port. The following payment methods are accepted: Cashiers check Travelers check Bank or postal money order Cash Credit card - Master Card, VISA, Discover or Bravo Card holder must be present if paying at the port Sorry, no personal checks are accepted Please note: Payment must be received before or when your container arrives at the port Shipment number must be noted on your payment Which Container Is Right For Me? - Return to top - Matson offers Full Container Load service (FCL) and will provide you with a clean, empty ocean container for loading your personal household goods. You, as the shipper, are responsible for packing, loading and securing your personal household goods in the container. While containers vary slightly in size, these are the inside measurements of our three basic container sizes for Hawaii and Guam: Inside Length: Inside Width: Inside Height: Door Opening: Cubic Capacity: 19'4" 7'6" 7'8" 7'6"W x 7'4"H 1,172 ft. Inside Length: Inside Width: Inside Height: Door Opening: Cubic Capacity: 39'6" 7'9" 7'10" 7'8"W x 7'6"H 2,387 ft. Inside Length: Inside Width: Inside Height: Door Opening: Cubic Capacity: 39'5" 7'8" 8'10" 7'8"W x 8'6"H 2,686 ft. Inside Length: Inside Width: Inside Height: Door Opening: Cubic Capacity: 44'5" 7'6" 8'10" 7'8"W x 8'6"H 3,030 ft. Note: As a point of reference, the furnishings of an average 3-bedroom home will likely fill a 20-foot container. Please measure all your furniture, boxes and other cargoes to determine the container that will meet your need. Container cubic capacity is figured by multiplying the inside length x width x height in inches and dividing that sum by 1728 the number of cubic inches in one cubic foot. Obtaining Your Container For Loading - Return to top - There are two ways you may receive a container for loading: You can arrange for a UIIA approved trucking company to deliver a Matson container and pick it up after you have loaded your personal household goods or You can allow Matson to arrange for a trucker to deliver a container to your home or business The container will be delivered to you on a chassis (wheels) raising the container floor about four feet above the ground. Matson does not provide ramps or lift-gates, tie-downs or packing materials for loading. If you choose to coordinate your own trucking, please be sure to ask the trucking company if they are a Uniform Intermodal Interchange Agreement approved carrier. If they are unsure about their interchange status, please have them contact the UIIA at 1-877-438-8442 or visit the UIIA web-site at www.uiia.org Trucking charges must be paid directly to the trucking company you have chosen. To avoid parking violations for a container parked on a public street overnight, we strongly advise that you take a moment and check with your local city hall officials or police department for restrictions Container Pick-up At Destination Port - Return to Top - When the liner vessel arrives at its destination port, your personal household goods shipment will be discharged and placed in our container yard and you or your designated trucker will be notified that the container is available for pickup. Once your container is discharged from the vessel at the destination port, Matson allows you free time for use of the container. On the mainland, Matson provides 48 hours to pick-up your container from our container yard. In Hawaii and Guam, Matson allows 10-days free-time to pick-up, unload and return the container empty to the Matson container yard. Free time in Hawaii begins with the first midnight following availability of your personal household goods shipment. After the free time expires, daily port storage or container detention charges will accrue. If you are arranging your own trucking we highly recommend you have your trucker of choice pick up your personal household goods shipment within the allotted free time to avoid costly daily charges Ports Served - Return to top - Mainland: Full Container-load service is offered to or from Long Beach , San Diego or Oakland, CA , Portland, OR and Seattle, WA . FAQs Get an Estimate Tracking Contact Us Frequently Asked Questions General FAQs Q: Can I get insurance to cover my household goods during the move? A: For current coverage please see Matson's limited liability clause . For additional coverage please: Check with your current insurance carrier to determine whether your current coverage includes moves from the US Mainland to Hawaii. Consult your local Yellow Pages or Internet for Marine Insurance Carriers Additional coverage may be obtained by purchasing Ad Valorem with Matson Navigation. Q: How can I be sure my contents are secure from the time I load them into the container to the time the container is delivered? A: While the container is in your possession, you may lock it with a padlock if necessary. However, lock must be removed before the container is delivered to Matson for shipment All containers receive a seal when closed for final transport. The US Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security and Matson can inspect any container at any time to insure no illegal, dangerous or hazardous cargo is loaded into a container. Q: Can I put a car, truck, tractor, boat or other vehicle in the container along with my furniture and other household items? A: Motor Vehicles, boats or motorcycles may be included in your container for an additional charge. Q: Are there any weight or content restrictions for loading a container? In response to a catastrophe such as Hurricane Katrina, we look to our immediate and extended "Ohana" (family in Hawaiian) for support. Matson, through our parent company's charitable arm, the A&B Foundation, has established a special program which, through September 30, 2005 will match, dollar-for-dollar, personal donations made by employees to any 501(c)(3) United States tax-exempt relief/aide agency or charity providing disaster aide to Hurricane Katrina victims. The A&B Foundation monetary match will be split between the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army. February 24, 2005 Matson Plans New Guam, China Services for 2006 Purchase of Two New U.S.-built Containerships Announced OAKLAND, CA – February 24, 2005 -- Matson Navigation Company, Inc. (Matson), the ocean transportation subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc . (NASDAQ:ALEX), announced today that it intends to invest $365 million in vessel, container and terminal assets to launch a new Guam and China service beginning in February 2006 when its present ten-year alliance agreement expires with APL. As a key element of that plan, the company has entered into cash on delivery purchase contracts for two new U.S.-built containerships with Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc . (KPSI). The vessels to be acquired will be similar in capacity, speed and operating efficiency to Matson’s MV Manukai and MV Maunawili , both built by the same yard and placed in service in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The two new ships are expected to be delivered and placed in service by July 2005 and June 2006 at an estimated combined cost of $315 million. Matson has the option to time charter these vessels in lieu of purchasing. It also will have a right-of-first-refusal with KPSI for up to four other containerships of similar design that are deliverable by the Philadelphia yard before June 2010. By mid-2006, both new ships will be deployed in an integrated weekly West Coast-Hawaii-Guam-China service together with three of Matson’s most efficient diesel-powered containerships. The planned routing will include port calls at Long Beach, Honolulu, Guam and two ports in China. “Matson’s highest priority for the past two years has been the development of a viable replacement service for Guam,” said James Andrasick, Matson president and CEO. “We also have a continuing interest in expanding our reach into new markets, and at the same time strengthening our service reliability to our home state of Hawaii. This further investment in new U.S.-built containerships satisfies all of those objectives. Matson has been proudly serving the Pacific since 1882, and this new service underscores that commitment, particularly with regard to Hawaii.” Andrasick added: “These new ships, coupled with our other two new KPSI vessels, will ensure that Matson continues to provide Hawaii with efficient, dependable ocean transportation services for decades to come. The investment marks a significant milestone in achieving our fleet replacement objectives. With their more fuel-efficient diesel engines, state-of-the art shipboard technology and a number of ‘green’ environmentally friendly design elements, these four new ships will provide Hawaii with a strong, modern, reliable lifeline to the U.S. Mainland. As Hawaii’s leading ocean carrier, Matson is acutely aware of the vital role ocean transportation has in supporting the Islands’ economic activities and recognizes the importance these investments will have in supporting Hawaii’s future growth.” Matson has been modernizing its fleet in recent years, retiring older steam-powered ships to improve fuel and operating efficiencies. With the addition of the two newest vessels, the average age of Matson’s active containership fleet will be a relatively young 14 years. “Matson is very satisfied with the performance of the first two KPSI-built vessels that are now part of the company’s Hawaii service,” added Andrasick. “We are confident that these additional two KPSI ships will further enhance the overall quality and operating efficiencies of the Matson fleet.” Matson provides ocean transportation, intermodal and logistics services in U.S. domestic markets. February 24, 2005 WEB CAST TO DESCRIBE MATSON S NEW GUAM CHINA SERVICE - New Ships Resolve Guam Service Replacement Dilemma, Add Upside Honolulu (February 24, 2005) — Alexander & Baldwin, Inc . (NASDAQ:ALEX) will conduct a web cast on the subject of the just-announced new Guam China service by its subsidiary, Matson Navigation Company, Inc . The web cast will be at 11:30 a.m. EST on Friday, February 25. Participants will be Allen Doane, A&B president and chief executive officer, James Andrasick, Matson president and chief executive officer and Chris Benjamin, A&B vice president and chief financial officer. Listeners can access the web cast on A&B’s corporate website, www.alexanderbaldwin.com via a link called “Matson’s Guam China Service Web Cast, February 25, 2005, 11:30 a.m. EST.” Matson announced today that, in February 2006, following the expiration of a strategic alliance agreement with another carrier to serve Guam, it would replace the present Guam service with an integrated Hawaii-Guam-China service. Planned routing includes Honolulu, Guam, two ports in China and Long Beach. The new service will employ three existing Matson ships along with two new container ships in a five-ship string that will provide weekly service. In China, the vessels will be loaded with eastbound cargo destined for the U.S. West Coast. The service will be unique among the trans-Pacific services because it will combine a secure and growing base of westbound freight to Hawaii and Guam with eastbound freight from the robust Asia market. “This decision allows Matson to retain its competitive position in the Guam service, while simultaneously strengthening the Hawaii service and adding a new growth opportunity with carriage of cargo from China,” said Allen Doane, president and chief executive officer of A&B. “The greater operating efficiencies of these new ships will directly benefit our core market—Hawaii—at the same time that they greatly expand Matson’s reach into new markets. “We can take advantage of this opportunity because the Company has a strong balance sheet, has the use of a Capital Construction Fund to provide tax-advantaged funding of ships and can employ the strong cash flow from its shipping business to fund the investments and related debt. “At the same time, A&B has all the necessary elements to sustain its growth momentum in Hawaii real estate. We have a committed management team at A&B Properties and ample capital resources to pursue value-enhancing investments. Our track record has been excellent and we are optimistic about our future opportunities in Hawaii real estate. With Matson’s new Guam China service and A&B Properties’ ongoing investment in Hawaii real estate, we also continue to be optimistic about A&B’s ability to create long-term value for our shareholders.” Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., headquartered in Honolulu, is engaged in ocean transportation and intermodal services, through its subsidiaries, Matson Navigation Company, Inc. and Matson Integrated Logistics, Inc.; in property development and management, through A&B Properties, Inc.; and in food products, through Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company and Kauai Coffee Company, Inc. July 18, 2004 New Matson Containership MV Maunawili Christened in Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA – July 18, 2004 -- Matson Navigation Company, Inc.’s (Matson) new containership MV Maunawili was christened Saturday, July 17 at Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc.(KPSI) by Ms. Maryanna G. Shaw, great grand-daughter of Samuel T. Alexander, one of the founders of Matson’s parent company, Alexander and Baldwin, Inc. (A&B) . The vessel is the second of a two-ship, $220 million contract with KPSI. Among those present for the ceremony were Charles M. Stockholm, chairman of the board, A&B, Allen Doane, president and CEO, A&B, James Andrasick, president and CEO, Matson, and the event’s keynote speaker, Lt. General Gary Hughey, deputy commander of U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM). “Investing $220 million in two new U.S.-built containerships was a significant step for Matson, and represents a significant commitment to the Hawaii market that we have served for more than 120 years,” said Andrasick. “This new ship will help ensure that Matson continues to provide Hawaii with efficient, dependable ocean transportation services of superior quality and value. Most importantly, it has been designed and built specifically for our Hawaii service customers and will meet the current demands of our market.” The Maunawili is the second new Matson ship of the 21 st century. The first, the MV Manukai , was delivered to Matson by KPSI in September 2003. The Maunawili , along with its sistership Manukai , has been designed to meet Hawaii's current and future market requirements. Foremost among those requirements is the additional capacity for large container sizes, such as 40, 45 and even 53-foot boxes. The vessel is also equipped with enough generator capacity to support the refrigerated container requirements of the Hawaii trade. Other features include a more fuel-efficient diesel engine, modern shipboard technology and a number of "green" environmentally friendly design elements. In his keynote speech, Lt. General Hughey reinforced the important role of the U.S. Jones Act: “I have no doubt that as long as America maintains the Jones Act as the foundation of our maritime policy, U.S.-flag vessel operations will meet the needs of waterborne commerce. And it will sustain the maritime infrastructure – the builders, the owners, the mariners – whose labors always have and always will ensure our security.” He added: “USTRANSCOM, Military Sealift Command, the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, and MARAD support the maintenance of a viable U.S.-flagged fleet and U.S. mariner pool. We can’t do business without either.” In his remarks during the ceremony, Andrasick commented: “The christening of our second ship, the Maunawili , is cause for a true celebration. I say this not only because construction of the two ships is soon to be completed. We now have living proof in the Matson fleet that KPSI builds quality ships. Today, the first KPSI vessel, Manukai , is enroute to Los Angeles from Hawaii, where it is completing its 21 st voyage since entering service last October. We have tested the ship in a number of performance areas and it has been successful on all counts.” The Maunawili will commence with sea trials later this month and enter Matson’s Hawaii service in the fall. As a replacement vessel, the ship will be one of eight ships deployed in the company’s service between the West Coast and Hawaii. October 5, 2003 Matson's New MV Manukai Arrives in Honolulu on its Inaugural Voyage HONOLULU - Matson Navigation Company's Company's new 712-foot containership MV Manukai arrived October 5 in Honolulu on its inaugural voyage. The vessel is the first new containership built for Hawaii in the 21st century and is the first new build to enter the Matson fleet since the MV R. J. Pfeiffer in 1992. The ship has the capacity to carry 2,600 containers (twenty foot equivalent units) and will be deployed in Matson's Hawaii service between Long Beach and Honolulu. It is the first of two new Matson containerships being built at Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (KPSI) at a cost of $110 million each. The second vessel, MV Maunawili, is scheduled to be delivered in mid-2004. The Manukai, along with its sistership, has been designed to meet Hawaii's current and future market requirements. "This new ship will help ensure that Matson continues to provide Hawaii with efficient, dependable ocean transportation services of superior quality and value," said Jim Andrasick, Matson president and chief executive officer. "This significant investment also underscores our long-term commitment to remaining the state's leading ocean carrier. Most importantly, it has been designed and built specifically for our Hawaii service customers and will meet the current demands of our market." The ship was christened in July at KPSI by Margaret Inouye, wife of Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii. Margaret Inouye's participation in the ceremony had a special significance in that she christened Matson's S.S. Hawaiian Enterprise in 1969, which was later renamed Manukai. At the time, the ship was the largest and most powerful containership under the U.S. flag. While in service, the ship completed over 700 voyages and carried over a million containers of cargo - a record for the Hawaii trade. In addition to being a good match for the Matson fleet, the KPSI ships provide the company with a unique opportunity to purchase high quality, U.S.-built Jones Act vessels at a relatively low cost. The Manukai is the first new ship to be built at the Philadelphia shipyard - and the first vessel to be built at the site in 34 years. The shipyard received initial financial support from the Philadelphia Shipyard Development Corporation (PSDC), the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA), the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the City of Philadelphia with the objective of rebuilding the former Philadelphia Naval Yard as a world class commercial shipyard. Under the agreement between Matson and KPSI, both parties will realize important benefits. Kvaerner will be able to establish itself as a major U.S. shipyard. In turn, Matson is able to purchase the two new ships at a cost well below other U.S. shipyards. July 12, 2003 New Matson Containership MV Manukai Christened in Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA - July 12, 2003 -- Matson Navigation Company, Inc's (Matson) new containership MV Manukai was christened today by Mrs. Margaret Inouye, wife of Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, at a ceremony held at Philadelphia Kvaerner Shipyard, Inc. (KPSI). The vessel is the first of a two-ship, $220 million contract with KPSI. Among those present for the ceremony were Senator Inouye, Governor Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania, Charles M. The Manukai is the first new Matson vessel built since 1992, when the MV R. J. Pfeiffer entered the company's service, and the first new Matson ship of the 21st century. The ship is also the first to be constructed by KPSI and the first new ship built in Philadelphia in 34 years. "This new ship will help ensure that Matson continues to provide Hawaii with efficient, dependable ocean transportation services of superior quality and value," said Doane. "This significant investment also underscores our long-term commitment to remaining the state's leading ocean carrier. Most importantly, it has been designed and built specifically for our Hawaii service customers and will meet the current demands of our market." In his remarks, Senator Inouye commented: "Today, we are celebrating the birth of a new ship for Hawaii - the first of a new generation that will serve the state in the 21st century. It marks a major commitment by Matson to ensure its transportation lifeline to and from the Islands remains vital, versatile and reliable. No state in the nation is more acutely aware of the vital role our U.S. Jones Act fleet has in serving domestic waterways. For those of us who call Hawaii our home, the steady flow of cargo vessels coming to and from the state is essential." Margaret Inouye's participation in the ceremony had a special significance in that she christened Matson's S.S. Hawaiian Enterprise in 1969, which was later renamed Manukai. At the time, the ship was the largest and most powerful containership under the U.S. flag. While in service, the ship completed over 700 voyages and carried over a million containers of cargo - a record for the Hawaii trade. The new Manukai is diesel powered, making it more fuel efficient, and is designed to carry a greater number of large container sizes. For KPSI, the christening of the Manukai is a milestone for the newly revitalized shipyard, which had formerly been a naval shipyard. Doane, who was born and raised in Philadelphia, said: "As the first ship to built here in 34 years, the Manukai marks the return of Philadelphia as a major shipbuilding center. Today's christening not only celebrates the birth of a new ship, but also the rebirth of a shipyard." The Manukai will commence with sea trials later this month and enter Matson's Hawaii service in the fall. As a replacement vessel, the ship will be one of eight containerships deployed in the company's service between the West Coast and Hawaii. May 20, 2003 New Agreements Reached with Offshore Unions; Matson to Proceed with Purchase of KPSI Vessels SAN FRANCISCO - May 20, 2003 -- Matson Navigation Company has reached agreements with its offshore unions that will allow the company to proceed with the purchase of the two new containerships currently under construction at Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (KPSI). As a result of the cooperative efforts of these maritime unions, Matson will be able to operate the new ships under a cost model that justifies the significant financial investment. The first of the two new ships will enter Matson's Hawaii service later this year; the second will be delivered in 2004. The maritime industry trade press reported in February, based on a Matson internal memorandum to employees, that rising labor costs had driven the operating cost model for the new ships to a level that made the investment uneconomic. Consequently, the company would pursue the option of time-chartering the vessels, which provides several lower cost crewing alternatives. With the new agreements now ratified, Matson will own and operate the ships and crew the vessels through its existing offshore unions. "Matson is very pleased that we have been able to reach agreements with all but one of our current offshore unions that will allow us to achieve most of the cost savings that are vital to this project," said James Andrasick, Matson president and CEO. "We are hopeful that a mutually satisfactory agreement can be reached with that remaining union, which presently provides one crew member aboard each ship that Matson owns and operates," Andrasick added. "Matson has been serving the Pacific since 1882 and has enjoyed long and successful relationships with our offshore unions. These new ships underscore our commitment to continuing to invest in U.S. domestic offshore markets, with U.S.-built and U.S.-crewed vessels. Because we operate in a very competitive environment, Matson remains focused on doing business in a way that is both cost effective and service oriented. We appreciate the cooperation we have received from these offshore unions in helping us to create a solid competitive footing for the operation of these new assets." May 29, 2002 A&B's Matson to Invest $220 Million in New Ships For Its Hawaii Service; Company Will Tap Existing $170 Million Capital Construction Fund HONOLULU, May 29, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- As expected, Matson Navigation Company, Inc. , the ocean transportation subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. s (NASDAQ:ALEX) , today signed a contract to purchase two new container ships, to be built in the United States by the Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc., for a total cost of $220 million, announced A&B President and Chief Executive Officer Allen Doane. The new diesel-powered ships replace two 30-year-old steam-powered vessels, and will improve reliability and fuel efficiency, as well as lower operating costs for Matson's fleet. Matson expects to put the first ship into its Hawaii service in late 2003, and the second in 2004. To finance the purchase, Matson will tap its existing Capital Construction Fund of $170 million, supplemented with external borrowings of approximately $50 million. Doane said, "This capital investment, while dilutive to A&B earnings immediately post-delivery, should improve Matson's and A&B's overall financial performance in the long term. The new vessels will further enhance customer service - with improved speed, capacity and reliability - and, with that, Matson's attractiveness as Hawaii's premier U.S. Flag carrier." As for its impact on Hawaii, Doane added, "These are high-quality vessels that are also high-value--we were able to secure a very good price for the ships, which ultimately benefits Hawaii's consumers. This investment underscores A&B's strong commitment to Hawaii and ensures that Matson has the resources to continue as Hawaii's leading ocean carrier, helping local business to prosper and providing our residents and visitors with the goods they need." In a separate news release distributed today, Matson provided further details about the vessels, the shipyard where they are being constructed, and how the acquisition of the new ships will support the needs of Matson's Hawaii service customers. More information about Matson's current fleet and its schedule serving Hawaii may be found at website www.matson.com . A&B's major lines of business are ocean transportation (Matson); property development and management (A&B Properties, Inc.); and food products (Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, Kauai Coffee Company).
