Following a close partnership with Safmarine for many decades, DAL Deutsche Afrika-Linien and Safmarine decided to form a long term alliance called the Safmarine / DAL Joint Venture (SAFDAL) in 1997 to represent their commercial interests in the Southern Africa Europe Container Service (SAECS). Both lines are members of the Europe Southern Africa Conference (ESAC) and the Europe Canary Islands Conference (ECIC). Being the most highly respected operator in the trade between Northern Europe and Southern Africa, SAFDAL combines traditional values and modern thinking. Management teams in Hamburg and Cape Town support an extensive network of well-established agencies, each with a strong presence in their local market and offering a wide range of value-added services tailor made to customer requirements. As the largest marketing organisation of the SAECS consortium - SAFDAL provides the most reliable service in the trade between Northern Europe and Southern Africa and has also developed to a major player in the trade between Northern Europe and the Canary Islands, suiting the needs of its customers. In both trades SAFDAL offers a wide range of ports and through - transport facilities, connecting all major areas in both Europe and South Africa including transhipment facilities to the islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma, based on SAFDAL's regular calls at Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Schedule). SAFDAL operates nine of the fourteen ships currently being employed in the service, of which seven vessels were purpose-built for the Europe/SA trade (main service) and the other seven being medium term chartered tonnage (intermediate service). Out of this fleet DAL currently provides one owned vessel, the DAL Kalahari and two chartered ones. The vessels are equipped to carry a wide range of containerised cargo and have reefer capacity in excess of 1.100 TEUs on the vessels operating the intermediate service. Unconventional cargo can be accommodated, within limits, at all major ports offered by SAFDAL. A floating crane is available in Durban and Cape Town for heavy loads, breakbulk cargo will be considered on application. Working in a close partnership with SAFDAL offers customers more than 100 years of experience and the background of two shipping companies being highly regarded in Europe and Africa representing the most tailor made product the trade can offer.
