Dunkirk is the n 1 French port of the North Sea. Large port of the North Sea. Annual Cargo traffic of more than 47 million tons. First French port for coal and ore imports. First French port for bananas imports from Antillas. First French port for steel exports First French port for sugar exports Second French port for traffic with Great-Britain. 5 725 called at Dunkirk in 2002 The port extends along 17 kilometres (10.6 miles) of shoreline and consists of two main areas, with nos estuary. The Eastern Port, sheltered behind locks, is accessible to ships of up to 14.20 m (46.6 ft) draught. It caters to ore carriers, oil tankers as well as bulk and general cargo vessels. The Western Port is just one hour away from the busiest sealane in the world. With direct access to the sea, it allows the fast turn-round of container ships and ro-ro ferries, as well as being accessible by very large ore or coal carriers and oil tankers with draughts of up to 20.5 m (67.3 ft). 5th European port (on the North Range) it is both a port of transit for all types of cargo and a large industrial plateform. Western Port A tidal port accommodates 300,000 tdw tankers, bulk carriers and container ships Eastern Port Behind locks accommodates 115,000 tdw fully-laden vessels A strategic location Between Paris, London and Brussels, Dunkirk has is positioned strategically at the heart of a market of more than 100 million consumers within a 300 kms radius: 1 hour from Brussels, 1 hour 1/2 from Paris or 2 hours from London (by high speed train). It is also the first important multipurpose port close to the Tunnel (25 km). Overland access : all modes of transport All means of land transport are available at the Port of Dunkirk, lying just one hour off the Channel / North Sea, the world's busiest sea lane. The A16 E40 and A25 E42 motorways directly link the port terminals with the European motorway network, avoiding local road traffic to and from the port. All quays are connected to the rail network. The port generates in excess of 50 trains a day and benefits from direct rail link to Eastern France and Europe through the north-eastern rail artery. The wide-gauge canal links the port to the European inland waterways and to the Paris Basin. Through all these regular lines the Port of Dunkirk trades with the whole world. A feedering service between Dunkirk, Rotterdam, Felixstowe and Le Havre allows to tranship in Dunkirk containers from and to all ports in the world. Activities in the industrial area represent about 20, 000 people in steel, petroleum products, chemicals, food stuff, repairs....
