Finsea Genoa is the holding of a Group operating in the maritime field. Its investments involve all sectors of the area widely known as "shipping" and specifically in Liner Ship Agency and Tramp, in the Port Terminals, in custom brokerage and logistics. The growing globalization of the large Liner carriers, in the Liner Agency field, has led to the creation of a number of Ship Agencies specifically tailored in order to satisfy the requirements of any major shipowner and then to the joining together of operating, administrative and IT functions in the Services Companies. The revolution in the traditional maritime transport, brought in by the containers, dramatically extended the areas of action of Liner Companies which are now, in all respects, directly or indirectly, involved in a global transportation system from production to customer site. Shipping Agencies had to adapt to the new requirements of various shipping lines. This caused a significant diversification between Liner and Tramp Agents' activities. For this reason, Finsea has created, for the Tramp activity, a specific company, in order to provide a service to shipowners and dry and liquid cargo traders. The Tramp division can secure smooth operations and a speedy despatch of vessels. The privatization of port operations during the first years of 1990, was considered by Finsea an important opportunity not only for the diversification of its activities, but also as the occasion to offer its customers highly qualified services in a very specific field of global transport. Therefore, together with other partners, Finsea has become a leader also in the port terminals area. Following the transport process from production to customer site, Finsea has created, together with the partners of the terminals, a specific company dedicated to intermodal transportation and able to transfer the cargo from the ports to all the internal points and vice versa. They are specifically placed in the key points of the acquisition of cargo, either ports or large internal centres, provided with a staff dedicated to the constant search of new customers. The sales organization of the Ship Agencies of the Finsea Group is certainly today highly specialized and professional. Its wide experience in shipping satisfies the requirements of each shipowner who wants to offer sea transport to all the markets of the world. Vessels' husbanding in tramp field is also a much developed section, fully structured with experienced port captains for the careful attendance of dry and liquid cargo vessels. The organisation, of the type "front and back offices" offsets any conflicting interest amongst represented Lines, as between shipowners and traders, enhancing the capacities to manage all core areas of the activity. Vessels and port operations, logistics, accounting and IT are dealt with by a single office center supplying the professional support, able to satisfy the most demanding requirements. With the growth of Intermodal transport, port intersections, whether in their function of sea-land link or of hub port, have become a key element for liner operators. With this objective, Finsea, in 1993 together with a couple of partners, anticipating the Italian law of privatization of port opertations in January 1994, asked and obtained, through establishment of the holding company G.I.P., the management of a Genoese Terminal Container, obtaining the berths and the areas in concession and taking over all the existing equipment. G.I.P., together with its local partners, has been also assigned the new container hub-port in Cagliari, ideally placed for transhipment throghout the Mediterranean area. G.I.P. has arranged for the readiness of the terminal and sought international partners to realize this outstanding enterprise. Finsea in this important investment as a port operator, aims at a diversification of the company and gives to the Ship Agencies of Finsea Group, the possibility to offer to its customers the necessary guarantees of port efficiency, that, up to recently, was the principal weak point of Italian shipping activities.
