DFDS Seaways History and Future DFDS has provided passenger services for more than 135 years. Our history dates back to the 11th of December 1866 when a group of prominent businessmen led by C.F. Tietgen decided to found the DFDS A/S (The United Steamship Company A/S). At its inception the company owned 19 ships and since then some 450 ships have carried the DFDS flag: blue with a white Maltese cross. DFDS A/S today is a modern service organization and our fleet is one of the largest in northern Europe. At DFDS Seaways we concentrate on our maritime passengers' needs and expectations for high quality cruising, leisure, holiday and conference trips. Forwarding, and logistic services, on the other hand, are offered to our professional customers through DFDS Tor Line. A program of sightseeing in Copenhagen is offered through DFDS Canal Tours. We are today, and will always be in the future, constantly influenced by changes in our surroundings. Our track record, however, shows that we have always managed to handle these changes in a way that have proven to be beneficial to our customers and passengers. A recent example is the effort we exerted in countering the consequences of the immediate repeal of tax free sales (shopping) by July 1999. To minimize its economic effects, we have changed several routes, implemented cost reductions and developed new logistic routines. The result is that we only need to make minor price adjustments on the routes directly affected by the repeal of tax free sales (shopping). DFDS Seaways (USA)
