When Atlantic Marine, Inc. was started in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, founder George W. Gibbs III was determined that his shipyard would be committed to build the finest commercial vessels, provide excellent service and always respond to the needs of its customers. The progressive management teams throughout the Atlantic companies carry on this philosophy. In 1966, Atlantic saw the need for a ship repair facility to complement the ship building activity and opened Atlantic Dry Dock on adjacent property. With a highly skilled work force, the new company quickly became known by its commitment to the customer producing excellent work, meeting deadlines, and always keeping the customer's budget in mind. In the 1970's the corporation grew substantially and by the 1980's, visions of expansion became actual plans. Significant additions to the company's existing property along the St. Johns River and Intracoastal Waterway portrayed the success of this maritime industry in Jacksonville. New repair piers, increased water depth, a new 4,000-ton marine railway and new launchways were part of the commitment that the company would provide the facilities and services necessary to fulfill their customer needs. Since 1989, the Atlantic Companies have operated Alabama Shipyard which concentrates on new construction, and its sister company, Atlantic Marine-Mobile which specializes in repairs and conversions. The additional yards in Mobile allowed the Atlantic Companies to expand their capabilities to build and repair larger vessels providing the same quality craftsmanship and to invest in the improved productivity and the future of both shipyards. Atlantic's facilities in both locations are among the finest in the industry with the most modern equipment and technology available. Known throughout the world for high quality workmanship, the skilled craftsmen take great pride in their commitment to excellence and their ability to deliver vessels on-time.
