Following the departure of the C.C.G.S. Hudson and the Alida Gorthon in early April, the VERREAULT dry dock was immediately occupied by two frequent visitors to the Les Méchins facilities. Taking up position for roughly a three week period between mid-April to mid-May, were GROUPE C.T.M.A.'s C.T.M.A. Vacancier , and the C.C.G.S. Pierre Radisson , a CANADIAN COAST GUARD Medium Gulf/River Icebreaker. In the dry dock for what amounted to general inspections and repairs, prior to a busy forthcoming season of operations between Montreal and the Magdalen Islands, the C.T.M.A. Vacancier underwent steelwork, as well as mechanical and paint services. Worthy of note is the fact that, much like SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT chose to do recently, GROUPE C.T.M.A. took advantage of Verreault Navigation's unique Rewards Program - V Points . By using previously accrued V Points , GROUPE C.T.M.A. were able to experience overall savings on items such as Dry-Docking and Engineering Services . As evidenced by these two recent private sector dry-dockings, it is becoming increasingly popular amongst our regular clientele to take advantage of the savings on offer through the program - a practice which VERREAULT NAVIGATION heartily encourages. The Pierre Radisson was dry-docked for it's regular inspection and repairs as well as for steelwork, piping and paint services, and hydrostatic testing of tanks. Also recently departed from the dry dock, was the SOCIÉTÉ DES TRAVERSIERS DU QUÉBEC car and passenger RO/RO ferry, Camille-Marcoux . The Camille-Marcoux underwent the following services while in dry dock: steelwork, mechanical and painting as part of it's biennial inspections. A special point of interest - this recent dry-docking marked the twenty year anniversary of the Camille- Marcoux receiving services exclusively in the VERREAULT dry dock, with a total of 9 dry-dockings over the past twenty-year period. To help recognise this momentous occasion, VERREAULT NAVIGATION hosted a cocktail for various personnel of the S.T.Q. who were presented with a plaque (shown right) to underline the importance of the relationship. At the cocktail ceremony, before employees from both organisations, Denise Verreault, president of Groupe Maritime Verreault , made the following comment: "On behalf of the entire VERREAULT TEAM, allow me to say that we are extremely pleased to be able to celebrate this landmark dry-docking of the Camille Marcoux, it also goes without saying that we at VERREAULT look forward to future visits by the Camille Marcoux - it is indeed a win - win relationship that we maintain with the S.T.Q." Meanwhile Mr. Pierre-Paul Desgagnés, director of Maritime Services for the SOCIÉTÉ DES TRAVERSIERS DU QUÉBEC took the opportunity to thank Ms. Verreault for the invitation to the cocktail, as well as to highlight the tenacity and determination of Ms. Verreault and the Verreault team, to have over the years developed such a reputable shipyard in the region - a yard that has never turned down a challenge, no matter what the size. As well, Mr. Desgagnés commented that the success of VERREAULT is "directly linked to the pride of it's employees as well as the courage of it's direction to rise to challenges and not be afraid to improve and grow with the times. It is necessary for us to recall that the rigour guarantees the success " As ever, the late spring/early summer season at Verreault is shaping up to be an extremely busy one with several vessels confirmed for the coming weeks and months. Hudson . The Hudson was in for it's special survey, with work required ranging from mechanical, steelwork and blasting and painting below the waterline. The dry-docking marked the second by the Hudson over the past eight month period, following an extensive high pressure hydro-blasting and paint job on all exterior surfaces above the waterline in the summer. Joining the Hudson in dry dock some days later for an emergency dry-docking, was the GORTHON LINES Forest Product Carrier, Alida Gorthon . Work required to the Alida Gorthon included the repair of a badly twisted rudder stock. Taking advantage of the time in dry-dock, GORTHON LINES also decided to have the intermediate dry-docking survey requirements completed by VERREAULT as well. Both vessels departed the dry dock earlier this week. With a number of other vessels lined up over the next several weeks and months, 2005 is shaping up to be an extremely busy year for VERREAULT . Especially significant to our regular clients, is the fact that the recent dry-docking of the Saunière marks the first time a VERREAULT client took advantage of the recently launched V POINTS Rewards Program - resulting in noticeable overall savings. VERREAULT NAVIGATION is pleased to report that for this particular visit, SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT took advantage of the Dry-Docking Package as well as the In Dry Dock Services Package and Wharfage Services Package by way of their previously accrued allotment of V POINTS . These V POINTS were accumulated when another of their vessels, the Algoport, was dry-docked on two separate occasions in the spring of 2004. Of course, SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT will also receive further V POINTS based on the work done this time around. VERREAULT NAVIGATION is looking forward to seeing their other clients make use of their own V POINTS in the very near future - allowing them to discover firsthand, the significant and valuable savings on offer through this highly innovative and unique Rewards Program. Finally, VERREAULT NAVIGATION busy as usual, has already secured several bookings for the coming months. This period of activity began with the dry-docking of two FISHERIES AND OCEANS vessels in mid-August. The Offshore Research & Survey vessel, C.C.G.S. Hudson and the Light Icebreaker/Major Navaids Tender, C.C.G.S. George R. Pearkes , were both in dry dock and later at wharf for just over a month's worth of work each. The George R. Pearkes received mechanical and cosmetic work, as well as regular inspection and survey oriented services, while the Hudson underwent hydro-blasting and painting services on all external surfaces above the waterline. Following the departure of these two FISHERIES AND OCEANS vessels, the CANADIAN FORCES AUXILARY VESSEL, Quest , entered the dry, along with the Armand Imbeau , one of two SOCIÉTÉ DES TRAVERSIERS DU QUEBEC (S.T.Q.) ferries that provides auto and passenger service between Tadoussac and Baie-Sainte-Catherine at the mouth of the Saguenay River. The Quest , which is managed by SNC-LAVALIN under an In Service Support Contract with the CROWN , was dry-docked for primarily cosmetic related services, including complete sandblasting and painting of the vessel, with specific hydroblasting and painting of all exterior decks. Some mechanical work was also conducted, including the removal and survey of the shaft. Meanwhile, the Armand Imbeau underwent regular 4 year survey related work. Immediately following the undocking of the Armand Imbeau and the Quest , the dry dock was occupied by the Jos Dêschenes , yet another S.T.Q. vessel which also operates between Tadoussac and Baie-Sainte-Catherine, and the GROUPE C.T.M.A. C.T.M.A. Voyageur , which provides cargo service between Souris, P.E.I., Cap-Aux-Meules in the Magdalene Islands and Matane. The Jos Deschênes underwent the same survey style treatment as the Armand Imbeau , while the C.T.M.A. Voyageur saw VERREAULT conduct equal parts mechanical, steel and paint related repairs and services. Finally, the month of September saw GROUPE MARITIME VERREAULT contribute to and take part in the celebrations for the INSTITUT MARITIME DU QUÉBEC's 60th anniversary . Once again, GROUPE MARITIME VERREAULT would like publicly to acknowledge the important role that the Insititute plays in the Québec and Canadian marine industries. Congratulations to the Institute on 60 years of contributions to the local and international marine workforce! Hydro-blasting the Hudson The Hudson and George R. Following several years of absence from the VERREAULT dry dock, OCEANEX recently returned to Les Méchins for maintenance requirements on one of it's three ro/ro container ships, the 483 foot long Cicero . The Cicero , which sails between Montréal, Québec and St. John's, Newfoundland, delivering consumer and industrial cargoes, arrived at the end of July for what amounted to roughly 3 weeks worth of inspections, maintenance, steel, and mechanical repairs. In the wake of the Cicero's departure, the dry dock was occupied by yet another preferred and loyal client vessel, the Georges Alexandre Lebel . The COGÉMA rail ferry that operates between Matane and Baie-Comeau underwent rapid mechanical work over a relatively short 3 day period. Of course, as with all of our preferred clients, OCEANEX and COGÉMA will be rewarded for their recent visits with allotments of V POINTS , allowing them to benefit from free service packages relating to vessel repairs and maintenance during the next three year period. With several contracts already underwayand a number of confirmations through toOctober already in place, the late summer /early autumn season is shaping up to be asbusy as the spring and early summerseasons. Following roughly 3 weeks in dry dock for emergency repairs involving significant steel replacement, the SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT self-unloader, Algoport , departed Les Méchins in mid June with several newly constructed double bottom modules in place. The three modules, which were required to renew the damaged hull and double bottom areas, were constructed on site in the VERREAULT steel shop, then skilfully and rapidly installed by VERREAULT NAVIGATION workers in order to facilitate a speedy return to operations for the Algoport and her crew. Immediately following the departure of the Algoport , the Felix-Antoine-Savard entered the dry dock. The S.T.Q. ferry spent just over one week in dry dock for routine inspections and maintenance, as well as major repairs to a damaged Schottel thruster. Most recently, the east end of the dry dock was occupied twice with consecutive visits by QUÉBEC CARTIER MINING's Vachon and EASTERN CANADA TOWING's , Pointe-Sept-Îles . As with the Felix-Antoine-Savard , both tugs were dry-docked primarily for regular maintenance and inspections and in both cases, necessary repairs were completed in under two weeks. In keeping with the active schedule maintained during the past six months, the Summer season doesn't show any signs of slowing down, with impending visits by the OCEANEX ro/ro containership, Cicero , COGÉMA 's rail ferry, Georges-Alexandre-Lebel and a further two S.T.Q. passenger/auto ferries still on the horizon. Arctic , has departed the VERREAULT dry dock. This dry-docking marks the 4th consecutive visit by the Arctic to VERREAULT NAVIGATION . Preparing Fednav's Arctic for undocking THE ALGOPORT RETURNS TO VERREAULT NAVIGATION FOR EMERGENCY REPAIRS Immediately following the departure of the Arctic , the dry dock is once again occupied by the SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT , self-unloader, Algoport . Having recently completed a dry-docking for regular maintenance in March, the Algoport has since returned to VERREAULT NAVIGATION following recent damages which were incurred while transiting the western coast of Newfoundland. Damages to the vessel were isolated to double bottom tanks on the starboard side towards the stern. Upon inspection, it was determined that the vessel should return to dry dock for repairs prior to completing any previously scheduled runs. In keeping with the highly efficient emergency repairs performed on another vessel earlier in the year, VERREAULT NAVIGATION will make every effort to deliver the vessel in as short a time frame as possible. A 24 hour a day, 7 day a week schedule will be maintained in order to minimise any further delays to an already occupied schedule of cargoes. As reported previously, other vessels slated for dry dock time in the coming months include EASTERN CANADA TOWING tug, Pointe-Sept-Îles , COGÉMA's Georges-Alexandre-Lebel and three SOCIÉTÉ DES TRAVERSIERS DU QUÉBEC ferries. Officially introduced to many of our clients at the GROUPE MARITIME VERREAULT suite during the 69th annual Grunt Club Dinner , V POINTS is a Rewards Program aimed at the host of loyal clients who regularly visit the shipyard for the maintenance and repair needs of their fleets. The program, who's concept should not be entirely foreign to those familiar with Air Miles (or other, similarly fashioned rewards programs), offers clients free repair and maintenance-related services, in exchange for points that have been accumulated following the completion of work on preceding vessels. Thus far, the program has elicited an extremely positive reaction from regular customers. To date, representatives from both GROUPE C.T.M.A. and SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT have expressed enthusiasm over this innovative approach to rewarding their repeat patronage. In the coming days, VERREAULT NAVIGATION's valued clients can expect a package outlining the details of this new, forward thinking and client oriented, initiatives program. We look forward to seeing each and every one of them take advantage of V POINTS as it has been developed with them in mind! UPDATE ON RECENT YARD ACTIVITIES Currently in the dry dock, and lined up for end of the month departures are the TRANSPORTNANUK ro/ro heavy lift vessel, Aivik and the SHELL CANADA -owned / V.SHIPS -managed bunkerbarge M/T Arca . The M/T Arca , which has been on site for the past several months, will depart LesM chins for Montr al with a skillfully installed, new, second hull. The Aivik has undergone repairsand maintenance at the VERREAULT facilities in preparation of an upcoming season of operationsin various ports off the Eastern Arctic including communities in Nunavut and Nunavik . With the departure of these vessels and analready busy late winter / early spring seasonbehind us, activities in the shipyard aren'tshowing any signs of slowing down for theremainder of the spring and early summer.Already confirmed for dry-docking in the comingweeks and months are the EASTERN CANADATOWING tug, Pointe-Sept-Îles , FEDNAV's iceclassO.B.O. The vessel, which was last in dry dock during the spring of 2003 for the installation of new bridge wings, was damaged when it struck the wharf while fighting strong winds at Cap-Aux-Meules in the Magdalen Islands early last week. It is expected that repairs to the vessel, which will be completed alongside the wharf, should be terminated by the 23rd of March. As reported in January, the SHELL CANADA -owned, V.SHIPS -managed bunker barge M/T Arca is currently undergoing the process of obtaining a double-hull. The majority of the critical steelwork on the M/T Arca was completed yesterday, and earlier today the bunker barge was floated out of the dry dock and moored at the adjoining wharf, where remaining work will continue alongside. The M/T Arca will return to the dry dock for remaining steelwork, as well as sandblasting and painting of it's newly installed second hull in the coming weeks. M/T Arca in dry dock, March, 2004 C.T.M.A. TRAVERSIER MADELEINE IN FOR THREE WEEKS IN FEBRUARY Other activities, have included the arrival and departure of another GROUPE C.T.M.A. vessel, the Madeleine , over a three week period commencing in early February. The Madeleine was in dry dock for it's regular two year survey and maintenance in anticipation of a busy tourism season on it's run between the Magdalene Islands and Prince Edward Island. The Madeleine departed Les Méchins on February 21. Preparing the Madeleine for undocking TRANS-ST-LAURENT AT VERREAULT FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE Immediately following the departure of the Madeleine, the space at the east end of the dry dock was occupied by the CLARKE TRANSPORT / TRAVERSE RIVIÈRE-DULOUP SAINT-SIMÉON ferry Trans-St-Laurent , which was in for regular maintenance work. The Trans-St-Laurent departed the dry dock yesterday. The Trans-St-Laurent in dry dock SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT 'S ALGOPORT LAYED UP AT LES M CHINS Finally, layed up at wharf since its arrival at Les Méchins in early February, is the 658 ft. SEAWAY MARINE TRANSPORT -operated self-unloader, Algoport . Topside work had already begun on the Algoport in anticipation of it's entry into the dry dock today. Work to be performed on the Algoport while in the dry dock includes steel replacement, as well as sandblasting and painting services. SHIPS -managed, and SHELL CANADA -owned bunker barge M/T Arca , which operates inMontr al harbour, supplying bunker oil to other vessels, is currently in the VERREAULT dry dock in order to undergo the process of obtaining a double-hull. The process, which should take roughly 3 months to complete, comes well in advance of proposed legislation which will, in all likelyhood, demand that all Canadian oil tankers have a second hull for environmental safety purposes. This initiative demonstrates a forward thinking approach to increasing operations standards and safety levels in Canadian waterways on the part of SHELL CANADA . It goes without saying that everyoneat VERREAULT is pleased to be taking part in this project. Verreault Navigation offers plenty of both, along with the kind of old-fashioned dedication that keeps our order book filled with repeat business and referrals. A Polar Star Is Born A former Swedish icebreaker, Karlsen Shipping's M.V. Polar Star was the first vessel of its type to be fully converted for expedition cruising in Arctic and Antarctic waters. Given the tight time frame for the job, Verreault's small-yard flexibility played a key role in seeing the project through to its successful completion. In just six short months, the Verreault team rebuilt the ship, stripping out sections of the interior and adding three new rear decks, cabins, a comfortable lounge, and a host of other amenities to ready the Polar Star for passenger service and ensure it met classification society criteria. Excellence from the Ground Up In addition to conversions, Verreault regularly takes on full-scale construction jobs. The John P. Oxley is a good example. This 56.85 m (186.6 ft.) oil containment and recovery barge was built to Lloyd's class for the Eastern Canada Response Corporation. Designed to intervene in the event of oil spills in Eastern Canadian waters, the double-hulled Class B vessel is equipped with 8 special recovery tanks, a complete ballast pumping system, a 10 ton telescopic deck crane, and a 14,500 lb. winch. The Team and the Technology Verreault has assembled a skilled and loyal labor force as well as an outstanding pool of subcontractors with a reputation for quality and superior workmanship. The shipyard boasts the latest in technology and equipment, and an ongoing R&D program that keeps the facility on the leading edge of the industry. Our solutions-oriented team offers a full range of specialized services, running from project design and engineering through to structural steelwork and detailed finishing and decorating. Steel Workshop Immediately adjacent to the drydock, our steel workshop handles structural steelwork and prefab modular assembly to accelerate the pace of conversion and construction work. The facility is also our center of operations for container conversions. Groupe Maritime Verreault - History Half a century young, Verreault has loomed large in the Quebec and Canadian maritime industries. Its uninterrupted success dates back to 1956 when Captain Borromée Verreault founded a dredging company at Les Méchins in the Gaspé. To meet local navigation needs, Captain Verreault committed his enterprise to his own personal values—skill, dedication, and hard work. These values have propelled the company forward ever since. For instance, the shipyard run by Verreault Navigation Inc., a member of Groupe Maritime Verreault Inc., is not only known throughout the world, but also considered the most productive yard in Eastern Canada today. Groupe Maritime Verreault Inc. was founded as a holding company in 1991 and includes Verreault Navigation Inc. 1956 Founding at Les Méchins by Captain Borromée Verreault 1982 Opening of the first drydock, 130 m (426.51 ft.) long 1991 Establishment of Groupe Maritime Verreault Inc., a holding company dedicated to marketing and developing the companies within the Group. 1998 Extension of the drydock to 244 m (800 ft.) 2000 Building of steel shop Groupe Maritime Verreault - Drydocks DRY DOCKS Length 800 ft.
