On its very first trip, it travelled across Europe from Germany to southern France – by land and sea…! For historical reasons the manufacturing is a trans-national process, structured around key manufacturing units in England, Germany and Spain, each of which is responsible for producing a complete section of the aircraft for delivery to the final assembly lines. It travels hundreds of kilometres before the plane finally leaves the ground. With a little help from CEC, the entire front and other vital parts of a brand new Airbus 380, got home safely and in time. The operation was carried out by CEC Century – a modern 9000 Dwat vessel, with a lifting capacity of 400 tons – and the units were sailed to the port of Saint-Nazaire in France, continuing by road to the final assembly site in Toulouse. Prior to executing the transportation a thorough study and cooperation between the technical staff of Airbus and CEC's port captains took place during which the team established the optimal way to execute the transport in a fast, efficient and safe way - abiding to the CEC pay-off 'On time -with care'. In particular, the height of the super structures combined with the lifting from quay into the vessels holds, was a difficult task which however was solved and carried out as planned following the close study and teamwork between CEC and Airbus.
