In 1884, Diodato tripcovich who was oinly 22, moved to Trieste. He was attracted by the developments in steam merchant shipping,whose traffics were concentrated in the Port of Trieste, the natural outlet of trade exchanges for the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. In 1891, after a period spent at Lloyd Austriaco as appreciated officer, he devoted himselfto mediation activities in the field of oak carriage by sea. Such a wood was exported from Slavonia to France to produce casks destined to cognac ageing.. After 4 years, in 1895, he createdthe company named Ditta D.Tripcovich Societ di Armamento e Agenzia Marittima. He bought a second-hand steamship, "CARLO" (359 grt), built in Winghorn in 1892, and he begun a modest activity along the Adriatic coasts.Rapidly he obtained unexpected results. Relying upon this success, as well as upon the trust he had gained, especially among his fellow-countrymen, Diodato Tripcovich enlarged his fleet of stemships, and he established regular coast shipping lines for goods and passengers. In December 1910, his fleet included 17 steamships, globally amounting to 43.000 grt.Since regular line services roved to be very important, Tripcovich's activities expanded in this field.A weekly passengers service was established between Trieste and Ancona. It was immediately followed by a daily service between Trieste and Venice.Goods and passengers trade ined kept on developing along the courses of the central Mediterranean Sea.The outbreak of the World War I entailed a reduction on Tripcovich's shipping activities, since the company's ships were occasionally confiscated to be used for war purposes.At the end of the war, Diodato Tripcovich decided that his whole fleet should fly the italian flag, and confirmed the enrolmentof all ships in the registers of the Shipping Department of Trieste.In this way, he succeeded in continuing and improving his shipping activity, that year after year madeTripcovich a leader in this field.In 1925, Diodato Tripcovich died unexpectedly at the age of 63,and he left to his sons, Mario and Oliviero, the heilm of the company,that with deep love and devotion he had created and developed.Those who had known Diodato Tripcovich said that he was a far-sighted, wise and prudent entrepreneur, as well as friendly man with the best human qualities.The outbreak of World War II brought about a new period of crisis for the company. Almost eighty percent of its fleet was sunk or confiscated. Neverthless, at the end of the war, under the direction of Baron Goffredo tde Banfield who in the meantime had married Maria Tripcovich, Diodato's daughter, and had secceeded in his brothers-in-lawMario and Oliviero, the company resumed the right course to rebuild the activity started by Diodato Tripcovich. The company's evolution as well as its business evolution, spread over many fields : diversification of carriages by seam including tankers, salvage and seafloor clearing of war mines in the Mediterranean Sea, port and open sea towage, road, railway, intermodal transports.However, the company has always preserved its founder's vocation : the sea.
