Dannebrog Rederi is our shipowning company established in 1883, built on old shipping traditions, quality and professionalism. All the companies in our group proudly carry the Danish flag, also called "Dannebrog" as the companies' trademark. According to the legend the flag fell from the sky during a Viking battle in 1219 and gave the necessary strength and courage to fight on and win the battle. The same spirit lives on within our group of companies today. Weco-Shipping i/s was established in 1965 by its present owner and today acts as chartering brokers for Dannebrog Rederi's tank cargo activities. Dannebrog Rederi is expanding their tanker activities by chartering in more tonnage and buying new or second hand tonnage. This decision was taken four years ago when two newbuildings, Amalienborg & Aggersborg 16740 dwt Imo 2,3 chemical tankers were ordered at Alabama Shipyard in the United States. The tanker business is and will stay an important part of Dannebrogs activities . Although it has been a poor market for the chemical carriers in the last 3-4 years, we believe that the market is turning and will once again become a profitable sector for the company. Some of our goals are to expand our vessels' contract coverage and establish ourselves in some specific trade lanes. We will always strive to service our customers best and provide quality service tailored for their needs. We have always been strong in the Western Hemisphere and will therefore continue to focus our expansion and trading there. Weco-Shipping i/s is operating modern and specialized tankers with the ability to carry almost any type of liquid cargo. The Dansborg is trading on the Continent, Mediterranean and West Africa. The remaining fleet is trading the spot market mainly in the Western Hemisphere. From its start as a listed company and up to 1967 the Shipowning Company was synonymous with the C.K. Hansen family and their brokering firm C.K. Hansen which until 1967 acted as managing owners for Dannebrog. The original share capital of DKK 900,000 was subscribed by a group of Danish businessmen and formed the basis for an order awarded to A/S Burmeister & Wain Shipyard for three 1,700 ton sister ships at a price of DKK 400,000 each. The three ships were delivered in the course of 1883 and 1884 and were named Christiansborg, Frederiksborg and Amalienborg, thereby launching a naming system for the Company's ships based on names of old Danish castles and fortresses ending in "-BORG", or "castle" in Danish. The naming system has been followed since that time, and many names have been used several times. One senses a strong national feeling behind the Company's name, its funnel mark and the naming system. No doubt this should be seen in the light of the two preceding wars against Bismarck's Germany, which created a new wave of national sentiment after Denmark's defeat in 1864. Under the umbrella of the firm of C.K. Hansen two new shipowning companies emerged, viz. the Steamship Company 1896 and the Neptun Steamship Company. However, both these companies were merged with the Steamship Company Dannebrog in 1918. At the outbreak of the First World War Dannebrog owned a fleet of 42 ships with a total tonnage of 137,000 ton, and Dannebrog was at that time Denmark's largest tramp shipowner. 20 of the ships were lost during the war, either because they were sunk or because they struck mines, one ship disappeared, and 60 officers and crew went down with their ships. Dannebrog never quite recovered from the wounds of the First World War, and after having completed a newbuilding programme for 16 ships, the Company was financially ill equipped to deal with the periods of hardship which followed the recession of the twenties and thirties. In 1934 the market showed a slight improvement and slowly Dannebrog's financial standing improved towards the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. At this time Dannebrog's fleet numbered 17 ships, of which eight were sunk or struck mines during the war and two were heavily damaged by mine explosions. 71 men lost their lives on board Dannebrog ships during the Second World War. In 1950 three Danish Shipping companies, Torm, J. Lauritzen and Dannebrog decided to place a joint order for five identical 16,000 ton tankers with Lindholmens Varv in Gothenburg. This was the beginning of Dannebrog's involvement in the tanker trade. In 1954 Dannebrog decided to step up its activities within the tanker industry and ordered a 19,000 ton tanker in Belgium to be delivered in 1955 as Dansborg IV. Dannebrog's last coalfired steamer the Nordborg I was sold in 1958. The fleet had now been reduced to 10 ships, however with a total tonnage of 100,000 dwt. i.e. the largest tonnage since the depression in 1930 which lead to sales and scrapping. In 1963 the majority of shares of the old esteemed shipping company Vendila was sold to Dannebrog. What was acquired was a shipping company without ships but with substantial cash reserves. Through the intervention of Kj benhavns Handelsbank and N.J. Gorrisen, Chairman of the board of Dannebrog, it was decided to separate the firm of C.K. Hansen and the Shipowning Company Dannebrog. Furthermore, the firm of C.K. Hansen was to resign as managing owner as from May 1967. From that time a new consortium consisting of Count Tido Wedell, Chr. Kjellerup Hansen and Baron Ebbe Wedell-Wedellsborg took over a shareholding of 18%, which had been the possession of the firm of C.K. Hansen since the formation of the Shipowning Company Dannebrog. In 1967 it was agreed to appoint Weco-Shipping i/s as Dannebrog's managing owner. Also in 1967, in June the Six Day War closed the Suez Canal. This led to a rising freight market, which increased Dannebrog's earnings and made it possible to carry out a complete financial reconstruction of the Company. Up to 1971 a total of six special tankers were built for Dannebrog, namely the so-called A-B-C ships: Amalineborg IV/Aggersborg III, Billesborg I/Brattingsborg III and Charlottenborg I/Christiansborg IV. They all proved to be profitable ships for Dannebrog, and were either sold at fair profits after some years or, like the B-ships, repaid after their building price several times over a 15-year period. In March 1971 the Company took over Aarhus Flydedok & Maskinkompagni A/S from DFDS at a contract price of DKK 3.5 million - at that time an ailing shipyard facing closedown with empty berths and worn-out facilities. After the takeover Dannebrog put the shipyard back on its feet and appointed a new and competent management. The results were not long in coming, and for many years the shipyard - now renamed Dannebrog V rft AS - was a significant and profitable enterprise in Aarhus. In 1989 the shipyard was sold. In 1973 Chr. Kjellerup Hansen wished to resign and he parted on the best of terms with Ebbe Wedell-Wedellsborg, who took over the sole management of the Dannebrog Group. For a period during the seventies the Company was heavily involved in the marine electronics industry. However, it turned out that this investment required so much liquidity, that it was decided to concentrate on shipbuilding and shipowning as the main activities. The only business that remains of the former electronics group is Printca AS in Aalborg. Printca manufactures advanced printed circuits to the electronics industry. In the middle of the seventies the Hong Kong office of Weco-Shipping i/s was by happy coincidence appointed managers of two Norwegian-owned livestock carriers, which were mainly trading between Australia and the Middle East, each ship carrying about 9,000 live sheep. This opened up a very special market in which an acute demand arose for the transport of live sheep to the Middle East in the wake of the oil crisis. In 1984/85 it became evident that the Arab could no longer afford the very extensive import of live sheep due to declining oil revenues, and in a very short time the market collapsed. The strategic aim for Ebbe Wedell-Wedellsborg was now to concentrate on niche trades and liner services not so sensitive to market fluctuations. The next step in that direction was taken in 1978, when Det Dansk-Franske Dampskibsselskab A/S got into financial trouble, and the company's old established liner-service, Dafra-Line on Westafrica was sold to Dannebrog together with the four liner ships serving Dafra-Line. Dafra-Line brought liner service know-how and several valuable shore-based employees and officers. Consequently, in 1984 Dannebrog had the courage to buy Nordana Line from D.F.D.S. together with four new Ro/Ro operated on bareboat. After the expiry of the charter parties of the ships, Dannebrog succeed in purchasing the ships, and they were renamed Skodsborg IV, Skanderborg III, Stjerneborg V and Schackenborg. Three of these ships are still on Nordana's liner service from the Mediterranean to Central America, the US Gulf, the US Eastcoast and back to the Mediterranean. In 1987 Dannebrog felt the impact of the depression which characterized the freight market for several years. The shareholders had to face the fact that their investment was lost, as it was necessary to write down the share capital to zero. The Company was delisted from the Copenhagen Stock Exchange and Dannebrog is today a 100 % family owned company. In connection with the terms of reconstruction of Dannebrog it turned out to be necessary to sell the increasingly unprofitable Dafra-Line and in the spring of 1988 Dafra and all of its activities were sold to the Belgian shipping conglomerate CMB in Antwerp. In 1998 the two 16,000 dwt. product/chemical tanker newbuildings mt. Aggersborg and mt. Amalienborg were delivered from Alabama Shipyard and they are after two years in a pool with a Norwegian shipowner now being operated from our headoffice in Rungsted. These two tankers together with the 8,000 dwt. mt. Dansborg carries cargo of vegetable oil, tallow, caustic soda and chemicals - a trade which for many years has been the lifeblood of the Company. Today, Dannebrog is managed by Johan Wedell-Wedellsborg as managing director, and with his father Ebbe Wedell-Wedellsborg as Chairman of the board. Dannebrog News Autumn 2001 and Weco JOHAN WEDELL-WEDELLSBORG TAKES OVER AS CEO 15 MAY 2001. DANNEBROG REDERI 2 I have now finalised the task of splitting up my life work, the group of WECO companies, in a way not only equal and just to my three children, but also one which secures the future of the shipowning companies. Not many people know that WECO is an abbreviation of WEDELL & COMPANY, which I introduced when setting up the company in 1965, in order to avoid using my somewhat elongated surname. The original founding partners have since died and I am today the sole owner. In 2002 I will be 70 years old, and consequently I have decided to introduce a succession programme to Weco Rederi with Dannebrog Rederi, Weco-Transport and Printca. As of 1 January 2001, Johan Wedell-Wedellsborg has taken over a block of shares in Weco Rederi making him joint owner with myself. The intention is to make Johan the sole owner of Weco Rederi and Dannebrog Rederi in the course of time. He has been CEO and shipowner of Weco-Rederi and Dannebrog Rederi as of 15 May 2001. Weco Transport and Printca will be separated from the shipping companies, and the full ownership of these two companies will be passed on to Ditlev and Nina Wedell-Wedellsborg. It is my intention to make Ditlev the sole owner of Weco-Transport and Printca over the course of time. Ditlev Wedell-Wedellsborg s employment in Dannebrog Rederi ceased on 15 May this year. I will continue as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Weco Rederi and Dannebrog Rederi as well as Weco-Transport. I will, however, step down from the Board of the latter company at the Annual General Meeting in 2002. I have already resigned as Chairman of the Board of Printca after more than 25 years in the chair. The management of Weco-Transport will continue unchanged with Axel Rasmussen as CEO and Peter Ulrik Jensen as Managing Director of Printca. When I resign as Chairman of Weco-Transport in 2002, Ditlev Wedell-Wedellsborg will take over this position. Finally, the situation is greatly improved, and the first 6 months of 2001 have been very successful in all areas of the business. Overall, Nordana Line has shown a healthy profit over the first two quarters of the year. We have started a new liner service between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. It s a joint venture between Nordana Line, Marfret, Maersk-Sealand and CMA-CGM. So far, we are extremely satisfied with the service and its revenues. The tanker activities have been restructured by centering all management functions in Rungsted. That, along with a strong shipping market, has turned our owned chemical tankers and long term timecharters into a profitable investment. We have a strong chartering team and are now equipped for expansion in that division. We are currently looking at various projects that involve buying additional tonnage both in the dry and the wet sector. So exciting times are ahead, even though the current markets are difficult to predict. We have overcome previous problems and are ready to take on new challenges. So with the new group structure and management team we hope for your continued support. EBBE WEDELL-WEDELLSBORG SECURING THE FUTURE HEALTHY PROFITS JOHAN WEDELL-WEDELLSBORG 3 DANNEBROG REDERI The outlook for chemical tanker owners has improved and we have been able to benefit from healthy and strong clean and dirty petroleum shipping markets. This is because Swing Tonnage typically larger chemical vessels or advanced product carriers capable of carrying both clean petroleum cargoes and chemical cargoes prefer the clean petroleum market leaving the dedicated chemical fleet to fight for the smaller cargoes. With fewer vessels available, supply and demand takes its toll, and freight rates have increased across the board. Accordingly, we have been able to operate our own vessels at reasonable revenue levels. This, combined with our decision to time-charter additional tonnage for short and long terms while the market was still fairly depressed, has resulted in healthy returns on the time-charter tonnage. During this period we have in addition to trading our own: Amalienborg, Aggersborg and Dansborg also traded Helene Knutsen (15,000 dwt, 1992 built chemical/product epoxy coated tanker), Delfini I (9000 dwt, 1983 built, chemical stainless steel and epoxy coated tanker), Maria N.E. (9,400 dwt, 1986 built, chemical epoxy coated tanker) and Gali (17,500 dwt, 1987 built, chemical/product epoxy coated tanker). After profitable trading, the Helene Knutsen and the Delfini I have been returned to their owners. Whilst trading the vessels from Soholm, we successfully developed strong relationships with new European clients as well as keeping in touch with our friends in the USA. This has enabled us to successfully enter the UK, Continental, Baltic and Mediterranean areas and take advantage of the strong markets there. So a big thank-you to all our brokers and charterers in Europe! The Amalienborg and Aggersborg have been approved for use by almost all of the major oil companies in the world, thanks to our technical department, our vessels masters, officers and crew working together to ensure the highest quality of transportation standards. The North American market on the other hand has not been too busy, with minimum exports and very little trading activity. As a result, we have traded our vessels elsewhere. We are hoping however, that the North American market will improve, so that we can re-enter our old stomping ground . The big uncertainty at present being the US economy and the threat of a possible recession which may result in a depressed world economy. Looking to the long term, our strategy is to focus on key clients and markets in order to secure ongoing transportation contracts for our vessels. With this as a baseline, combined with a stable market, we should be able to achieve steady revenues and cash flow from allowing us to expand and grow our fleet and future business. Commitment to our clients and quality in our work will be the building blocks for achieving this goal. LARGE TANK, BIG IMPROVEMENT M.T. GALI IN COPENHAGEN DISCHARGING JET FUEL LOADED IN GDANSK, JUNE 2001. SPORTS AND ACTIVITY CLUB DANNEBROG REDERI 4 In March this year Dannebrog Rederi established a 'Sports and Activity Club' for all employees at Soholm. The purpose of the Club is to further develop team spirit and inter-departmental relations within the organisation. The Club management has already organised several activities during its short existence. The first activity was a guided tour through the old section of Copenhagen. Our guide, dressed as a watchman from the 18th century, told the history of Copenhagen and described the older buildings in the area. An old lady accompanied the group singing popular folk songs from the period. After the tour, we were served refreshments at one of Copenhagen's traditional cafes, complete with entertainment from our guides. In June the Club arranged a demonstration day for experienced golfers as well as golfing 'wannabes'. This socalled Soholm Masters 2001 , played over 9 holes, was won by Jens Gall Jorgensen, while the 'wannabes' received instruction and finished with a competition on the Par-3 course. Benny Mistry was the winner here, and both received prizes during the supper held afterwards. After the summer holidays, the Club was ready with a new activity water-skiing. This was a real challenge for the courageous employees who dared to give it a try, and excellent entertainment for those who chose to watch. A barbecue followed the water-skiing. At the end of August Dannebrog Rederi participated in the annual Dragon Boat Regatta in Copenhagen with a team of 18 rowers and a drummer. The team got off to an excellent start and won the preliminary round and the semi-finals which took them into the finals with three other boats. In this race Dannebrog s team came fourth, but overall the team was a roaring success considering that 29 boats started the competition. The idea for the 'Soholm' Sailing Club, which was founded in May and aimed at Dannebrog Rederi s employees, began last year when the Company purchased a small sailboat for employees leisure use. Sailing instruction was also offered and it proved to be such a huge success that, consequently, as a new season approached, a larger sailboat was purchased. At the same time, it was necessary to found a club in order to have a set of rules and regulations. Once the club was formed, the Company duly handed over Amanda, a 31 feet Granada 910 sailboat. Amanda is extremely comfortable and well equipped and has until now been used for evening as well as summer trips. The sailing club today has 20 members. THE 'SOHOLM' SAILING CLUB 5 NORDANA LINE 221 TONS TRANSFORMER BEING LOADED ON BOARD BBC FRISIA IN FOS. February saw Nordana Line and BBC Chartering & Logistic of Germany entering into a joint venture under the name Great Dane Projects Inc. the aim of which is to establish a world-wide project and heavy lift cargo service. This will be achieved through integration of resources and a professional knowledge and experience of the targeted cargo segments. In March GDPI received their first new ship from Gdansk, Poland which was a 7,800 dwat fully boxed/tweendecker vessel with heavy lift capability up to 160m tons. The second new ship was scheduled to be delivered during April, and further units are planned. Nordana Line has been operating regular liner services between the USA, the Mediterranean and Latin America since 1957, specialising in Ro/Ro, project and break bulk cargoes. Nordana Line is today also operating various world-wide semi tramp/liner services and carrying specialised cargoes such as Europropulsion s section of the European space agency rocket launcher in French Guyana. A recent addition to the Nordana Line family has been a weekly fully containerised service from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean Sea, using five 1,700 TEU vessels. The service is operated together with Marfret, CMA-CGM and Maersk-Sealand. BBC Chartering & Logistic operates a fleet of more than 70 ships, ranging from 3,000 20,000m tons dwt with heavy lift capabilities up to 500m tons. This fleet includes MPP tweendeckers, Ro/Ro, container carriers and gearless ships. The company specialises in transport of heavy lift and project cargo. Using in-house cargo superintendents, BBC is able to monitor the entire movement of the cargo, guaranteeing the most cost effective freight solutions. Besides fleet management and transportation of project cargo, BBC is also active in competitive chartering, working together with other leading brokers, operators and underwriters all over the world. The main agents for sales and marketing of GDPI will be Argosy Shipping, Houston, for North and South America and Nordana Asia, Singapore, for the Far East. GDPI operations will be handled by BBC Chartering & Logistic, Germany and the commercial side will be handled by Nordana Line, Denmark. NEW JOINT VENTURE: GREAT DANE PROJECTS INC. NORDANA LINE 6 Nordana Line has long experience of transporting yachts, much to our customers satisfaction. Lately, the vessel Skanderborg and its crew exemplified this experience and our efficiency in carrying out such a task. The yacht in question was a 61 foot Hatteras called Time Out. The owner, Mr Michael Kane from the Washington D.C. area, had arranged to transport his yacht to and from the Mediterranean as he was planning to cruise the Aegean and the Greek Isles. Shipment of the yacht was effected with another carrier to the Mediterranean, and Nordana Line, with close cooperation between the commercial and sales departments in Rungsted, Piraeus and Baltimore, was able to secure this cargo from another carrier. Mr Kane wanted to ensure that his boat would be discharged in Baltimore at the end of November, and the m.v. Skanderborg was identified as the most suitable Nordana Line Ro/Ro able to handle the cargo in Piraeus. The boat and cradle were loaded on the port side forward, in order to facilitate a discharge to the water in Baltimore. Furthermore, the boat was also loaded from the water in Piraeus, and secured on the cradle specially designed for the yacht. After the long sea voyage through the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, the vessel arrived in Baltimore on November 30, 2000. Captain Kim Aarup himself operated the jumbo derrick, capable of lifting 120 tons. The crew of the vessel rigged the harness to a special spreader bar designed specifically for this purpose, and secured it to the boat. Captain Aarup skillfully manoeuvred the derrick, lifting the yacht slowly, with Mr Kane and his crew of two on board, over the side of the Skanderborg. The crane held the yacht in the water while the crew on board started the engines and ensured that the hull was safe. This operation was performed in a bitterly cold Northeast United States winter, with strong winds of up to 25 knots. Captain Aarup and his crew went beyond the normal course of action required to transport the yacht in impeccable condition, but also ensured a safe discharge. Close cooperation between all parties ashore ensured this cargo received the attention and service that customers have come to expect from Nordana Line and its agents worldwide. She was held in the water until engines and generators were as expected and then tied alongside (in 25 knots of breeze) until we were ready to depart. She was in virtually perfect condition. There had been no one aboard. All contents were safe. One TV antenna had been broken along with a minor part of her mast rigging. The pieces were handed to me with an apology. She was dirty and will be cleaned up but that was as expected. The dirt is not too severe and is mainly due to the fact that the cradle held her in a slightly bow down position so her decks could not drain completely. Everyone I met or spoke to that was involved with the Nordana Line was exceptionally customer service focused. In Pireaus Ms Angeliki and colleagues, in Baltimore Sunil Ahluwalia and Jim Taylor, on board the Skanderborg the captain and crew. All in all this experience greatly exceeded my expectations and I would not hesitate to use this line again when the opportunity presents itself a first class professional operation, as the commendations and awards in the Captain s conference room reflect. My thanks to you personally for being present and for assisting the offloading process which went very well. I look forward to future dealings should I purchase another vessel in the Mediterranean or elsewhere Nordana services. My best regards Michael Kane 7 NORDANA LINE THE SKANDERBORG S CAPTAIN WENT BEYOND THE NORMAL COURSE OF ACTION REQUIRED TO TRANSPORT THE YACHT IN IMPECCABLE CONDITION, AND ALSO ENSURED A SAFE DISCHARGE. NORDANA LINE 8 In the early days of Nordana Line the Atlantic service was operated with conventional tonnage not really conducive to container transportation. However, from time to time we accepted a 20ft standard container and occasionally a 40ft standard container, normally from the Mediterranean to destinations in the Caribbean or Latin America. The Nordana Line container fleet was small in the early 1970 s, so in order to live up to our core values of reliability and safety, investment was made in what was known as the black box . This was a small archive box capable of holding up to 100 container cards. Each card holding valuable information such as container prefix and serial number, size/type, lease type/company and date when the unit entered into Nordana Line service and all load and discharge movements combined with vessel and voyage numbers. All, of course logged in neat handwriting, enabling all staff to read the information. The trick was to move the cards around in the black box and file them under the correct location or vessel. Thereafter it was an easy task to produce stock reports, onboard vessel reports etc. You just placed your right hand into the box and grabbed all cards under a location or vessel and started counting. Later we turned really professional and used cards in various colours, so each size/type was instantly recognisable. Of course this system was feasible as long as we kept the fleet of containers to less than a hundred units or until the black box was completely crammed with cards. In the late 1970 s when Nordana line ordered new multipurpose Ro/Ro vessels for the service, interim tonnage was chartered until the delivery of the new vessels. These chartered vessels were all containerised with a capacity of up to 800 TEUS. So when vessel capacity went from approx. 20 TEUS to 800 TEUS, it took our breath away. Accordingly, the black box was out and we had to look at a more sophisticated means of tracking our many new containers. Wallboards were introduced to the office where all the colourful cards could be displayed under locations or vessels, giving staff a view of the equipment situation across the service. The junior clerk in the office had the privilege and responsibility to update information (still in clear handwriting) and move the cards every day based on telex reports and information from agents and overseas offices. It was undoubtedly colourful but not always easy to handle, especially if a card was misplaced! The wallboard gave a good real time overview of the equipment situation and current stock levels. However, when management started to request reports with historical information, the colourful picture from the wall boards faded as the poor junior clerk knew that hours (or even days) would be spent reviewing individual container cards to select the correct information/data. It soon became clear that Nordana Line needed to take a full step into the EDP world and in 1979 80 the first EDP system, called NORCON, was deployed. All agents and offices were instructed to produce daily container reports in a fixed format/syntax allowing the Copenhagen office to print all input onto telex tape. Once a day the computer was fed with several hundred meters of the tape and NORCON was updated with the latest movements. This was a giant step into the new electronic world and the Logistics Department obtained the tools to produce a large number of logistics reports including management reports with historical data. The system was gradually improved, and, in the mid 80 s, was converted to DANCAT, which ran to the end of the last millennium. One of the problems with both NORCON and the DANCAT was the poor interaction between head office and the agents around the world. Both systems were designed to collect a great deal of data and store, ready to generate reports at head office. However, both our agents and customers over the years proposed a system with easy access for all parties involved in the transportation chain. Nordana Line was therefore very pleased to deploy its state-of-art container logistic tracking system, UNIBOX, at the beginning of the new millennium. Taking Nordana Line s head office and management into the new decade with an on-line EDP system easily accessed by everyone involved in our business and shipping of our containers. They are now able to get on-line information and reports via the internet. Where information and data often in the past could be several days old, today we can provide information and data just a few hours after the actual movements have taken place depending naturally on agents reporting discipline. This is how we have gone from our Black Box to the hi-tech real on-line Web based Unibox system. FROM BLACK BOX TO UNIBOX 9 NORDANA LINE While continuing their trek to Central America, world record holders Emil & Liliana Schmid made a recent stop in Houston to visit Mr Steen Obst, Vice-President of Nordana Line. Mr & Mrs Schmid are currently Guinness World Record holders for the longest driven journey. Since 1984, the couple have travelled the world in their Toyota Landcruiser FJ 60 visiting 132 countries and amassing over 539,600 kilometres. Their next destinations are Nicaragua, Panama and Costa Rica, three countries they were unable to tour on their last North American visit. From Costa Rica, Emil and Liliana will board a Nordana Line vessel and return to the United States. They will then proceed to Savannah, GA to board a Gulf Africa Line vessel en route to South Africa. What began as a one year journey to South Africa has resulted in a 16-year trek. According to Emil, the only thing that would stop them is if our money, the car, or our health gave out. While some may view this as a glamourous lifestyle, day-to-day living can be a challenge. The space they share is smaller than most people s bathrooms and hotels and fancy restaurants are not an option. Emil and Liliana prepare their meals in a pressure cooker on a one-burner stove and wash dishes in a pullout sink hooked to a large plastic water jug. A 12-volt refrigerator/freezer provides storage for perishables. Their laundry is done in a 13- gallon water jug filled with detergent. Then we look for bumpy roads, laughs Liliana. The bumpier, the better. Emil and Liliana have shown that flexibility is paramount, as their original plans were changed due to unrest in South Africa. Adopting Plan B , they found their Toyota on a container ship headed for Montreal and the couple flew to New York and hooked up with the vehicle. They travelled throughout Canada, the United States and wintered in Central America. Nordana Line and Gulf Africa Line are proud to help Emil and Liliana Schmid continue their world record. NORDANA LINE 10 With increasing pressure on space and requirements from customers to increase capacity and frequency, Gulf Africa Line decided earlier this year to add one more vessel to its service, bringing the total to four. This has increased the frequency of sailings to one every 25 days. The routes have not been changed, with fixed calls at Houston, New Orleans and Savannah in the US Gulf and South Atlantic (inducement calls are made at a.o. Freeport, Beaumont, Port Arthur and Tampico). Fixed ports of call in South Africa include Cape Town, Durban and Richards Bay with inland services in South Africa as well as oncarriage to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya. The m.s. Le Li, built in 2000 and about 27,000 dwts, was successfully introduced into the GAL schedule in close coordination with NWWT, which ensures that the vessel has a full load from the Mediterranean into the Eastern seaboard of the USA. During the inaugural visit to Houston in April 2001, a placard was handed to Capt. Lin Jung Huan by Mr Rainer Lillienthal, General Sales Manager from the Port Authority of Houston. GULF AFRICA LINE EXPANDS SERVICE Weco-Shipping or Weco Haulage and Forwarding won an unusual contract in June this year, when we were asked to carry a windmill mould from Denmark to Spain at once . The unit was 35 meters long and 4 meters wide. On paper or loaded onto a ship it doesn t look like much but placed on a truck it was most spectacular. The mould had to be taken from the factory in a small village in Jutland via the port of Kolding to Santander in Spain for further transport to its final destination in the Spanish hinterland. The 35 meter monster was loaded on a specialised lowbed trailer and transported with its escort via tiny roads to the port. The truck had to reverse 2 kilometres on a narrow road from the factory to the first available highway, as no turning facilities were available in the village but this was no big deal for the driver. The mould was loaded onto the deck of a German coaster on its way to Spain and was successfully delivered to the customer four days later. Weco was in charge of the whole operation truck, ship, forwarding, stevedoring and the busy traffic police. Providence berthed at TCV terminal in Valencia, Spain on 8 January 2001, it marked the inauguration of Nordana Line's new Mediterranean- Caribbean container service, as well as the end of the existing service, which was based on Marfret/Nordana Line cooperation. As is customary nowadays, the new service is jointly operated by CMA-CGM, Maersk- Sealand, Marfret and Nordana Line. The service deploys six fully containerised and geared vessels, each with an approximate capacity of 1,300 teu. The schedule is based on fixed day, weekly departures with a 42-day voyage rotation which includes the following ports: Valencia/Fos-Sur- Mer/Sete/Leghorn/Genoa/Barcelona/- Algeciras/Pointe-a-Pitre/Fort-de-France/San Juan/Rio Haina/Manzanillo/Cartagena/- Puerto Cabello/La Guaira/Basse Terre/Fortde- France/Algeciras. Focusing on punctuality, reliability, frequency and speed, this new service referred to as the M-Service represents a huge improvement over the former biweekly service. In conjunction with our well-known bi-weekly multipurpose service which in addition to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, also embraces Central America, the U.S. Gulf and East Coast, Nordana Line now offers one of the fastest and most frequent services in this area. This links with our weekly container service between the U.S. Gulf, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Colombia and now also the Dominican Republic. Arguably we now offer the most complete coverage of the Caribbean basin. Importantly, great commercial benefits have been gained at little extra cost. Indeed, the increased frequency has helped optimise the utilisation of our container equipment leading to cost savings, which are essential in this highly competitive environment. The service, which has now been up and running for more than six months, has been well received by the customers. Overall performance has exceeded expectations and our initial optimism has proved justified. More importantly perhaps, this new Mediterranean- Caribbean service has significantly strengthened Nordana Line s name and position in this trade and a solid platform has been established for further development and expansion. DANNEBROG REDERI 2 As mentioned in our last newsletter, business was good in all sectors. We were lucky to maintain the momentum throughout the year, which resulted in a very healthy 2001 for Dannebrog. We also stated that we were looking at buying additional tonnage in both the wet and dry sectors. So far, we have bought a 40,000 dwt product tanker, m.t. Christiansborg, and are still actively seeking more tonnage in both sectors. The sale of Nordana Line was announced last year. We had signed a letter of intent with C. P. Ships, who pledged themselves to buy the various liner activities within Nordana. However, for several reasons, the deal fell through and we have since advised the market that Nordana Line is no longer for sale. This is a promise I have made to the people involved with Nordana, and a promise I intend to keep. In fact, we are expanding in many sectors and our aim is to grow at a steady pace for years to come. A current concern of ours is that Nordana Line's unique S-vessels are getting older, but I am confident we will find a solution before the year is out. In the dry sector we opened a small service from Tarragona to Salerno and Livorno. The purpose was to target all the trailers in that area as they pose a continuous problem for the road systems in Europe. At first, a ro/ro vessel was used for the service, but it proved uneconomic and was subsequently replaced by a smaller container ship. This turned out to be the right decision and the service now looks very promising. Our project service from Southeast Asia to the USA, the Mediterranean and North Europe has also increased its activities: we now have a monthly service and are securing more and more steady business. The Singapore office has started offering a monthly service to Australia, North West Express Line, with an 8,000 dwt multipurpose tweendecker. This service, which primarily handles project and breakbulk cargoes, has proved very lucrative for the group. In our tanker sector we concluded a large contract from the Far East to Northern Europe. This is a new trade area for us, involving larger vessels than previously handled by Dannebrog. We are very excited about this opportunity and the challenge it offers, and feel confident it will be a success. Despite a tough start to the year due to market conditions and start-up problems with the m.t. Christiansborg, it looks like the worst is over and, taking into account the many expansions within the various sectors, we are optimistic about the future. Our results will not be as good as last year, but we hope to remain in the black. Aggersborg for the past year with satisfactory results, we have now succeeded in securing long-term time-charter employment for both vessels. Our time-charter customers are very satisfied with the vessels' performances, and we have received nothing but positive feedback all credit to the master and crew as well as the technical department! Our two other chartered vessels, the m.t. Khirurg Vishnevskiy and the m.t. Gali, have been trading in a sluggish clean petroleum market on the Continent and the Mediterranean. The vessels are performing well even so, the market will need to show some additional improvements to allow us to achieve acceptable daily results. We have also made a long-term contract commitment in the palm oil market with a major palm oil producer. Our service will include regular shipments of palm oils to and from Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and the Straits to the Mediterranean and the UK. We are pursuing this business with great enthusiasm and our goal is to become a major palm oil carrier by the end of 2002 and to continue trading with our new contract partners for years to come. In view of our long-term commitment to the palm oil market, we have bought m.t. Christiansborg, a 40,490 dwt tanker built in 1982. The vessel has undergone an extensive upgrade to meet the strict Dannebrog Standard. We have also taken on the m.t. Irina 2 (24,500 dwt, built in 1983) on long-term time charter for use in this trade. We plan to actively seek additional tonnage similar to these two vessels for further expansion of our tanker fleet. This will be done by time charter or straight purchase, possibly by a combination of both. We aim to control a small fleet of three or four tankers of similar size by the beginning of 2003. With sizes varying from 24,500 to 40,000 dwt, we can meet our charterers' needs and provide our contract partners with a flexible and competitive variable load programme. Jan Torgersen TANKERS ENTERING NEW SEGMENTS DANNEBROG REDERI 4 Last autumn our Sports and Activity Club (SIA) arranged a popular go-carting evening. After a short introduction, the 90-minute 'Le- Mans' took off with teams of three or four, and was won by Jorn Nielsen, Jan Torgersen and Soren Planck. Members were so enthusiastic about go-carting that SIA organised another event which started with an individual race, followed by a two-hour 'Le- Mans'. The winners were Jan Torgersen and Soren Hempel. In November, 45 competitors both employees and their partners took part in the two-hour-long SIA Bowling Masters 2001. The fun evening finished with a prize-giving dinner Bent Larsen came first, Jorgen Alex Jensen second, and Michael Sogaard third. So far, we have been more 'cultural' this year. We went to the theatre to see the musical 'Chess , which was a fantastic and impressive show. Quite a few employees also made use of the Club's ticket offer for the film 'Lord of the Rings'; they enjoyed it very much and are eagerly awaiting its sequel. The latest event was an evening at the Planetarium in Copenhagen, where '3D Mania', the story of 3D and its origins, was shown in 3D format. Christiansborg, the latest addition to Dannebrog Rederi's fleet of tankers, was taken over from Product Shipping Corporation of Liberia during the vessel's port call at Marseille, France, in November 2001. The vessel is a 16-cargo tank, 4 segregations, 45,000 cbmtr., 40,490 tons dwt, IMO class III oil tanker, built in 1982. Prior to her purchase, the vessel had been operated under the technical and crew management of Naess Shipping BV, the Netherlands. Following the takeover, some extra maintenance work was needed to bring the tanker up to company standard. Carried out mainly during the days between cargo operations, the work consisted of cosmetic and technical improvements in several parts of the vessel, including the recoating of all cargo tank bottom areas. The vessel left Argentina on 24 February this year, loaded with a full cargo of Naphtha for Taiwan. There was a short stopover at Cape Town on 11 March, to take aboard additional spare parts, provision and lub. oils. We believe that m.t. Christiansborg will perform well and prove a valuable addition to the fleet of Dannebrog Rederi tankers. Walter Tonshoff M.T. CHRISTIANSBORG. M.T. Congratulations for the first class organization and hospitality. Personally I was glad to meet with all the agents and be able to put a face to many of the names. The fact that the meeting was in a very relaxed, friendly and happy atmosphere only added to the outcome and success of it. Weco Agencia Maritima, S.A. was set up in Barcelona on 1 November 1996 as Nordana Line s general agents in Spain. The company started off with a staff of seven, including Managing Director Paco Rivero, who used to be the Sales Manager in the former Nordana Line Agency. The company has been expanding and now employs 14 people in Barcelona, two in the recently opened office in Tarragona, and another two in the Madrid branch. Once the company had been solidly established, the chief aim was to look for new business. In November 1997 the company was appointed general agents for Brointermed Lines Ltd., a liner service between Spain and Libya. And in 1998 Barcelona became the main transhipment port in the Mediterranean for Dannebrog's liner and other connecting services. The development of bookings for project and parcel cargoes made up an important part of business in 2000. It generated a new source of income for the company, which until then had chiefly focused on liner services. The new activity has increased and now represents almost 20% of the total revenue. In October 2001 Weco Agencia Maritima, S.A. was appointed agent for Tarraco Line. After operating with a local sub-agent for a few months, a new office was opened in Tarragona, managed by Eusebio Gomez. Since the founding of Tarraco Line, the activities in that port have increased considerably. We believe that the port has a huge potential and we will be working hard towards furthering our activities there. Aware of future market requirements, with customer services set to become the most powerful sales tool, the company developed its own software system over nearly two years of dedicated research. In 2001 the website www.weco.es was launched on the Internet. The website is now in its second phase and will provide our clientele with a range of additional benefits consistent with market requirements. Thanks to a thorough training programme which also allows for work experience at Nordana Line's head office in Rungsted, our staff is highly qualified and motivated, and always committed to the client. In the next few years, a new training programme will be implemented, complete with 'outdoor training' and 'teambuilding' sessions. In October 2001 Weco Agencia Maritima celebrated its fifth anniversary. We are proud that in the five years of its existence the company has acquired a reputation for high-quality service in the market, and has grown into a sound and solid business with steady profits from day one. PACO RIVERO, MANAGING DIRECTOR. 7 NORDANA LINE Since the previous Agency Meeting a decade ago we have witnessed tremendous changes throughout the shipping industry. Competition has become fiercer and now tends to be dominated by global carriers. Our clientele demands more and better services at lower cost. However, we can proudly state that Nordana Line has met the challenges of adapting to the everchanging market needs by continually providing innovative and individual shipping solutions while still remaining profitable. Talent, responsibility, delegation, accountability, reliability and safety awareness are all vital factors to achieve this. Yet, they are not enough in themselves to guarantee future success. True success also requires the last three of our core values, namely team spirit, close one-to-one relations and effective communication, which have been internalized by the entire Nordana Line crew. Having all the commercial key players within the Nordana Line family gathered, the Agency Meeting was therefore based on these themes. The mere fact that enrolment in the Agency Meeting exceeded 107% is clearly a reflection of the strong relationships between the representatives of Nordana Line around the world despite the turmoil experienced with C.P. Ships at the end of last year. In addition to the Nordana Line staff from Denmark and abroad, a total of 57 highly motivated commercial participants from 34 Nordana Line agencies in 27 countries attended our two-and-ahalf- day Agency Meeting hosted from 23-25 May at the hotel and conference center Scanticon Comwell, Snekkersten. During the Meeting each agency gave a presentation of the prospects, expectations and ideas in its respective sphere of responsibility. An inspiring seminar on personal and public leadership & management showed how we can all contribute individually to the common goals by pro-actively seeking synergies through interdependency. A rather unorthodox, yet entertaining team-building & co-operation course was hosted by 'Gutten'. Stating that the level of co-operation reached ecstatic heights when we all sang 'Halleluja' and played the Djembe (a West African drum) would not be an exaggeration! Pre-planned commercial cross meetings were held with highly effective communication amongst all participants. A total of 218 (!) specific action plans were agreed upon in the 22 meeting rooms and the fruits of everybody's dedication and efforts are already becoming evident. On Friday evening a joyful tent-party was hosted at the Nordana Line head office premises. Attendees, among them also Nordana, Weco and Dannebrog employees at Soholm, celebrated and danced until the small hours, enjoying the excellent surroundings, a vast choice of delicious food, drinks of all colours, and a group of fantastic singing waiters. An entertaining Nordana Line Jeopardy spread both relevant and less relevant facts about Nordana Line, while a guided canal tour and an evening at the Tivoli Gardens gave participants a taste of Wonderful Copenhagen. The Agency Meeting helped create and strengthen many relationships; many ideas were born; many challenges were agreed upon. Although the value of interpersonal relationships cannot be measured easily, the event has reinforced our belief that our success is the result of the joint efforts of everyone involved. We will not wait another decade until the next Nordana Line Agency Meeting. NORDANA LINE 8 Nordana Line is proud to announce its container newbuilding programme for 2002. An order for the manufacture of 750x20DC, 400x40DC and 200x40HC was confirmed in early January. The production at Changzhou Xinghuanchang International Containers was completed on 21 March, and delivery to Nordana Line at designated depots in the Mediterranean, the United States and Central America began around 1 May 2002. As new equipment is delivered to Nordana Line, old equipment will be selected for phase-out, either being off-hired to leasing companies or sold off. A container park renewal will not only help reduce Nordana Line's overall equipment costs through savings on maintenance and repair but, more importantly, will significantly reduce the risk of damage to customers' cargoes. Nordana Line is committed to the future and to offering the best service to all its customers. We plan to continue with container newbuildings over the next several years while at the same time phasing out old equipment. Our goal is to maintain an average equipment age of our container park of seven years. Carla Nielsen CONTAINER PARK NEWBUILDING PROGRAMME In October 2001, Nordana (Asia) Singapore, together with partners in Australia, started an official service under the name North West Express Line. The m.v. BBC Australia, a 4,600 dwt boxshaped tweendecker, has been period-chartered for this service. Southbound, the Line services local exporters from Singapore/Jakarta to Christmas Island, as well as the oil and mine industry in Western Australia. Northbound, it provides the only existing service for shippers in Fremantle to the Cocos and Christmas Islands. All the supplies to these islands come either from Singapore or Fremantle.
