The history of the Shiprepair Yard Nauta goes back to early twenties and is linked with the construction of the sea port at Gdynia. The 7th October 1926 was the date of its establishment. That day the Town Council of Gdynia passed the resolution which advised to professionally elaborate an investment project for developing a new state-owned shipyard. .......On 9th May 1927 a shipyard, named NAUTA was founded. However this shipyard survived only for eight months, because at the end of 1927 it was forced to declare bankruptcy. .......The private owners of the liquidated NAUTA made decision to bring it back by establishing on 31st December 1927 a new firm named Gdynia Shipyard Co. In the years 1928-1939 it built 35 ships, mostly wooden fishing cutters and lifeboats. .......During the II World War, almost all infrastructure and 60 % of buildings were destroyed. In the few years after the War three companies operated at the present area occupied by NAUTA and they were: Zaklady Zlomowania (scrapping works), Stocznia Rybacka (fishery shipyard) and Remontowa Obsluga Statkow (shiprepair services). .......As a result of a reorganisation and mergers of those three companies one shipyard was founded with a task to run shiprepairs and to build small crafts - first of all fishing vessels and technical crafts. Altogether, including the pre-war time, 400 fishing vessels and 80 technical crafts were built. .......One important date in the yard's history is year 1954 when the first floating dock of 1,200 tons lifting capacity was installed. Further development was marked with another lifting facilities: 1966 - dock 3,500 tons,1979 - dock 4,500 tons and, in 1993 ship elevator 600 tons. .......Naturally, that those new facilities have not been the only factor leading to increase the production output and to improve the standards of performance. Putting aside limited ability to accommodate bigger ships, NAUTA became an efficient and competent in any kind of work even the most sophisticated and higly specialised as lengthenings and conversions. It is worth to mention that NAUTA enjoys another specialisation, namely in repairs of the small warships - mainly for the Russian navy. .......Historical event for the shipyard was the reconstruction of the burn-out tanker "Cielo Azzuro", ordered by an Italian shipowner and completed in 1974, as well as a year later made conversion of an crude oil tanker into a product carrier. The work was ordered by a German shipowner and the converted ship was named "Gertrude Wiener". .......As the time lapsed, the lengthenings and conversions as well as newbuildings became the shipyard's specialty more and more recognized worldwide. .......The shipyard's statistic showed that only from 1953 to 1973 the shipyard built 235 ships, including 143 fishing cutters, 4 rescue vessels, 34 miscellaneous tugs, river icebreakers, and in the years 1974 to 2000 shipyard delivered 82 new ships - tugs, dump barges and fishing trawlers. .......Historically important dates are following: 1st June 1976, as that day it launched activity as the Shiprepair Yard NAUTA, this was after 50 years it came back to its pre-war name and 1st January 1999 when it was transformed into a stock company obtaining the name of Shiprepair Yard NAUTA Co. .......It is worth to mention separately about one contract, namely about the conversion of the British salvage vessel Challanger (she was in service as auxiliary craft for the British nuclear submarines) to a unique ship for excavation of diamonds from the sea - bed. The Challanger under the new name Ya Toivo, left the shipyard as the biggest and the most modern ship of this kind in the world. She was lengthened from 135 to 147 meter and widened from 18 to 24 meter. The whole structure was strengthened and the internal part was completely modernised. That work was ordered by the Italian owner who had co - operated with Nauta previously. Ya Toivo will operate on a charter terms contracted by the South African operator. .......High quality of shiprepairs, conversions and newbuildings performed by the shipyard, application of modern shipyard technology, high professional qualifications of the shipyard's staff made that in 2000 the Shiprepair Yard NAUTA Co. of Gdynia was granted the certificate of compliance with ISO 9001 international standard of quality management. The shipyard's statistic showed that only from 1953 to 1973 the shipyard built 235 ships, including 143 fishing cutters, 4 rescue vessels... Shiprepair Yard "Nauta" S.A.
