We work to improve our clients' quality, safety, environmental and business performance. Founded in 1760 to examine merchant ships and 'classify' them according to their condition, today the organisation's expertise and activities extend far wider than the shipping field. In addition to its marine activities, we have operations covering management systems, land-based industries, railways, and oil and gas. The Lloyd's Register Group has more than 200 offices and over 5,000 employees. Through its constitution, the Lloyd's Register Group is directed 'to secure, for the benefit of the community, high technical standards of design, manufacture, construction, maintenance, operation, and performance, for the purpose of enhancing the safety of life and property at sea and on land and in the air'. Independence and integrity The Lloyd's Register Group operates independently of any government or other body and can assure absolute commercial impartiality. It is a non-profit distributing organisation; income derived from our fees and the sale of publications is used for research and development, training our staff and to improve services. A General Committee, comprising representatives of the main industries that we serve, oversees the organisation. This committee is based in the UK and is supported by other committees around the world. The Executive Chairman, David Moorhouse, is a member of the General Committee, and he manages the day-to-day affairs of Lloyd's Register, together with the Chief Operating Officer, Chris Loughlin and the organisation's team of directors. There is now a publicly available specification (PAS 55) which identifies best practice for asset management. As well as providing a route map for the introduction of an asset management regime, certified compliance with the specification also allows operators to demonstrate effective management to stakeholders. Operators can now provide evidence of effective asset stewardship against an independent, third party standard. Lloyd's Register actively participated in the development of the specification, drawing on its many years of experience of asset management in a variety of capital intensive industries; particularly marine, oil and gas, rail and utilities. We can now offer two core services in support of the development and maintenance of an effective asset management regime, and can assess existing management frameworks against this independent British Standards Institute specification, as promoted by the Institute of Asset Management. Training - provide senior management with an overview of the requirements of PAS 55, and for practitioners, a more detailed course to train staff how to implement the specification. Verification - assess and if compliant to certify, conformance with the requirements of the specification. In addition, and where there is not a conflict of interest with our other services, we can provide consultancy to help establish an asset management framework. This was a favourite haunt of merchants, marine underwriters and others, all connected with shipping. Lloyd helped them to exchange information by circulating a printed sheet of all the news he heard. In 1760, the Register Society was formed by the customers of the coffee house. The Society printed the first Register of Ships in 1764 in order to give both underwriters and merchants an idea of the condition of the vessels they insured and chartered. In 1834, the organisation was reconstituted as Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping, and the first 'Rules' for the survey and classification of ships, were published. Sixty-three surveyors were employed in the first year and by 1840, 15,000 vessels had been surveyed in accordance with the Rules. In 1852, the organisation opened its first overseas office, in Canada, and other offices followed around the world. By 1914, the organisation became simply 'Lloyd's Register of Shipping' in recognition of its international status. In the 1900s we began to apply our expertise developed in the marine industry to other industrial sectors resulting in today's wide ranging services. Now the organisation is know as simply 'Lloyd's Register' as its activities extend beyond the marine sector. For more than two centuries, safety and reliability have been assured through Lloyd's Register surveys of the quality of materials, workmanship and construction.
