General Information The St. Petersburg Seaport is the one of the oldest ports in Russia and is the main gateway of the country's international trade. Convenient geographical position - the Port is located on the island of the Neva mouth in the eastern extremity of the Baltic Sea helps to cut transportation, transit and other expenses. The port is connected to the sea by the Seaway channel with the length of 27 miles. The navigation continues all the year round, during winter navigation ice piloting of vessels is provided by the icebreakers, which are under operational control of the St. Petersburg Port Authority. If necessary, vessels are piloted by powerful tugboats of JCS Port Fleet, whose main function is to carry out manoeuvring and mooring operations within the ports water area. Each vessel, coming to the port, is handled according to the optimum variant with the use of modern equipment. This has been made possible due to the continuous plan schedule, which provides coordination of time of delivery and handling of water, railway and road transport. The time of loading and discharge of vessels is taken account of on a day-to-day basis, the allocation of fleet is promptly determined. To each cargo operations the Port is ready beforehand. Today vessels from all over the world dock to the berths of Nevskaya Harbour. Presently there are 78 berths fitted with the required handling equipment. The majority of berths can accommodate vessels drawing 9.8 m, but there are also berths capable of accommodation ships with a draft of up to 11 m and length of 260 m. Today the JSC Sea Port of St. Petersburg handles one quarter of the total volume of foreign trade cargoes among other ports of Russia. The Port continuously increases its cargo flows and improves its internal infrastructure. A constantly increasing turnover confirms the efficiency of the pursued tariff, marketing and advertising policy, cooperation with the customs bodies and high professionalism of the Ports employees. A number of large investment projects have been completed, such as: construction of the first stage of the new container terminal and mineral fertilizers handling complex, which will allow to attract additional cargo traffic. Ice Navigation The Port of St. Petersburg is the freezing one. The ice navigation usually lasts from December to April. The pilotage of the vessels is provided by three port ice-breakers an liners arctic ice-breakers which are owned by the Murmansk Shipping Company.
