The family from which Reinhard Wessels, the managing director of Rederij Wessels B.V., is a descendant has been active in the shipping business for over more than 100 years, mostly out of Haren-Ems, in Germany. Originally, the ships of Reederei Wessels GmbH, the firm of Reinhard Wessels' ancestors, were designed to transport timber and peat. Peat was being exported from the areas rich in peat in the North of Germany and timber was imported on the way back. When peat no longer was in demand as a source of fuel, Reederei Wessels GmbH was forced to make a switch to other types of cargo, which made it necessary to change from small to larger seaworthy ships. In the nineteen-seventies, Captain Gerhard Wessels, the father of Reinhard Wessels, designed a special type of ship, a seagoing-river-vessel, the Cargoliner. This type of ship has been a prototype to many vessels in this category. For this achievement and for his contribution to the development of the shipbuilding industry, Captain Gerhard Wessels received an honorary Doctorate of the University of Bratislava in Slovakia. Under his management, Reederei Wessels GmbH grew out to one of the most prominent shipping companies. At this moment, Reederei Wessels GmbH is in charge of 29 vessels with a total carrying capacity of 93,897 tons dead-weight (dwt). In 1926, when Reinhard Wessels' grandfather ordered a ship at the shipyard Van Diepen B.V. Waterhuizen in Groningen, the first contacts and connections with the Dutch shipping industry were made. Seventy years later, in 1996, Reinhard Wessels re-explored the Netherlands for possibilities and opportunities to expand his family's firm. As said, in 1996 Reinhard Wessels started to explore the Netherlands for possibilities to expand the German based firm. The Dutch government in that period created a favourable environment both for shipping companies as well as for private investors in shipping companies. Another reason to select the Netherlands and Rotterdam in particular, was the fact that the logistics of most transports by water (sea and / or river) are concentrated in and around this city. In 1997, these favourable conditions resulted in the founding of Rederij Wessels B.V. in an area in Rotterdam referred to as the "Scheepvaartkwartier" (Shipping Quarter). Rederij Wessels B.V. recently moved from this "Scheepvaartkwartier", where she resided as an co-inhabitant with an other shipping company, to her own office at the Sluisjesdijk 141, in the Waalhaven in Rotterdam. At this location, Rederij Wessels B.V. has her own quay (Portnumber 2128), where ships of her fleet can moor. The fleet, managed by Rederij Wessels B.V., comprises of fifteen ships with a total carrying capacity of 56,246 tons dead-weight (dwt). The fleet mostly trades in the Northern European and Mediterranean waters. In charge of management are Reinhard Wessels and Uday Yellapurkar, both qualified and with tens of years of experience with the ins and outs of the various aspects of the shipping industry. As a company, Rederij Wessels B.V. is concerned with the direct management of ships from her own fleet, as well as of ships from other firms and / or owners. Rederij Wessels B.V. takes care of the commercial, technical and nautical management, the administration of financial transactions and wages, third party management and agencies. Rederij Wessels B.V. is a DIN EN ISO 9002 certified company (since 1999), and a reliable and full-service partner for marine transport, with an excellent reputation, which can provide a tailor-made service compatible with today's 24 hours business market. Crewing Manager Dutch Crewing B.V. The crewing manager, Dutch Crewing B.V., is a subsidiary company that takes care of the crewing of most of the vessels that are being managed by Rederij Wessels B.V.. This subsidiary firm is located at the Veerhaven 4, in the renowned "Scheepvaartkwartier" (Shipping Quarter) in Rotterdam. The crew on board of Dutch flagged vessels consists almost entirely, except for the captains, of seamen originating from Ukraine and Russia. These seamen are trained by our agents in their native countries and, after a period of testing and screening, are then introduced to us and interviewed per telephone. Officers and sailors who have concluded these procedures to our satisfaction then travel to Rotterdam. After an obligatory medical check-up, the officers have to take even some more tests. Finally, when the crewmembers have concluded these tests and tasks successfully, they will obtain their required Dutch seaman documents. Only hereafter they will travel to the ship they were assigned to. On board, the Captain will fill them in on the ins and outs of their daily routines. The crewmembers that are being replaced by the new arrivals will fill them in on the specific details of their jobs. A labour agreement usually is limited to a time span of 6 months. During this period of time, Dutch Crewing B.V. takes care of the monthly payments to the relatives of the seamen. Dutch Crewing B.V. also collects the quarterly reports on the seamen, drawn by the captain and discussed with the crewmember involved. Upon termination of the labour agreement, tasks are handed over to the replacements and Dutch Crewing B.V. makes all arrangements necessary for the homeward journey of the crewmember involved. Depending on the performance and after debriefing and consulting with the agents, it is decided whether a crewmember should be recommended for another labour contract within the company.
