KG Kanalufer 14 D-24768 Rendsburg Tel.:04331-1437-0 Fax: 04331-1437-10 The history of Reederei Karl Schlüter can be traced back intothe last century. Schlüter’s maternal grandpa-rents used to plythe river Eider. The motorized sailing ship „Henny“, built in 1898 in Hoogesand,Holland, which belonged to Johannes Jess (1882-1956), grandfather ofthe firm’s presentowner, Jens-Peter Schlüter, was the last freight ship to passthroughthe Eider lock in Rendsburg. Due to the opening of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Channel in 1895 thetradings shiftedfrom the river Eider to the new channel. From that time on, the familyconductedthe shipping between the german and the danish coast. Until her sale in1953the Henny was participating in this trade. After the second Worldwar captain Karl Schlüter (1912-1994),father of Jens-Peter Schlüter, bought a lighter that had beenheavily damaged by bombs and had it turned into a smart freighter with500 tons dead weight at the Uecker shipyard in Rendsburg. The „HeikeSchlüter“ was the firstship owned by the shipping com-pany that Karl Schlüter founded in1950. The „Heike Schlüter“ was commanded by her owner until 1958,mainly transporting timber between Scandinavia and England. After asuccession ofnew ships, each larger than the predecessor, the 1973 launch of the„Gabriella“,built by Hugo Peters in Wewelsfleth, marked the beginning ofmulti-vesseloperations. From that time on the fleet was expanding steadily. In 1975 Jens-Peter Schlüter became a partner in his father’sfirm. In this year the „Thomas Mann“ was ordered, a containership witha dead weightof 2,200 t and space for 150 containers. Having ordered this ship astrategicimportant step was done. With this ship the trading areas of ReedereiKarlSchlüter were expanding to the Mediterranean Sea. In the following years more newbuildings were put into service (1977„TheodorStorm“, 1978 „Matthias Claudius“, 1979 „Heinrich Heine“, 1981 „TheodorFontane“,1983 „Hermann Hesse“, 1984 „Lady Ulrike“), each one with more capacitythanthe predecessor. These ships were trading world wide. Due to a sensible and reasonable company policy Reederei KarlSchlüter developed into a middle-sized company that could evencope with hard times, for example in the mid eighties. In 1985 Reederei Karl Schlüter put the „Wild Eagle“, acontainership with a capacity of 1022 TEU, into worldwide trading. Withthis ship the firststep towards larger containerships was done. In 1995 this developmentcumulatedwith the „Northern Dignity“, a containership with a capacity of 3.606TEU.With the „Henny“ put into service in 1997 the wheel turns to a fullcircleback to the roots of the company. Today, Reederei Karl Schlüter both owns and manages severalships, which are owned by other companies. At the moment there are 30shorebased staffmembers and about 350 seamen employed in the company. There is a special focus on longterm employment and education of thejunior-staff. Both, the highly qualified shorebased staff and seaman on the onehand and the use of sophisticated techniquel equipment on the otherhand enables Reederei Karl Schlüter to maintain a thorough goodcondi-tion of the managed ships and to employ them in a economic way. With the Implementation of the Quality, Safety and EnvironmentalProtection Management System, which conforms to the requirements of DINISO 9002, ISMCode and STCW 95, Reederei Karl Schlüter not only fulfilsregulations that become mandantory in 2002, but also organizes itscompany in compliance with the requirements of our costumers andbusiness partners in terms of quality,ships-safety and environmental protection. The certification of this system through Germanischer Lloyd showsthe saidbusiness objectives clearly to our costumers and business partners.
