HEMPEL Saudi Arabia is 25% owned by the Danish group, HEMPEL's Marine Paints A/S. The HEMPEL Group was founded in July 1915 by Mr. J.C. Hempel, initially as an import-export company trading in chemicals. By 1917 the first factory producing marine coatings had been established. Over the years, growth was rapid and by 1939 the group was truly international with seven factories and 27 agents handling HEMPEL products around the world. Today, the HEMPEL Group has, including subsidiary and associate companies, 25 factories and over 150 main stock points around the world. As well as being one of the leading suppliers in marine coatings worldwide, HEMPEL is now a major supplier of protective coatings to the industrial market. Likewise, the group is also a key player in the decorative paints market in several countries, as well as an important supplier of yacht paints and coatings for containers. The Group headquarters is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, which also serves as the centre for the company's research and development activities. In May 1995 a new research and development facility was opened at a cost of several million dollars, an investment necessary to ensure HEMPEL's technological leadership. The Group also has additional research and development facilities in Barcelona, Spain, where emphasis is on decorative paints. HEMPEL Saudi Arabia maintains very close relations with the HEMPEL Group.
