The Port of Hamburg is no longer merely the gateway to the world, it is actually one of its centres. This is where "SCANSCOT Shipping Services Deutschland" has established its head office, right opposite the historic bonded warehouses and along the harbour road from where the great, traditional shipping companies direct their vessels across the oceans. This shipping company which was founded in 1967 by Scandinavian and Scottish shipowners - hence the name SCANSCOT - began as a special carrier and transported mainly timber products from British Columbia to Europe, as well as cellulose and paper from the Baltic countries to the Far East. Today 8 "SCANSCOT" vessels are in operation across the globe day and night, transporting whatever is required from them. They transport no longer just timber, they are also able to carry flexible project tonnage such as factory plants, equipment and machinery needed for the economic infrastructure of the country of destination. "SCANSCOT" enjoys the ideal location in the Port of Hamburg. Despite the global nature of shipping transportation, and the world-wide activities of "SCANSCOT", the two German heads of this subsidiary of the Finnish "Thominvest Group", Michael W. von Brauchitsch and Lothar W. Dienst have remained faithful to Hamburg. This commitment comes their firm conviction that "Made in Germany" is and will continue to be a guarantee for product quality, now and in the future. SCANSCOT is able to "tailor-make" its ships to suit every customer requirement, and this contributes to its success. Eight variable multicarriers with the white "S" for "SCANSCOT" on the green and black funnel are in operation across the oceans. The fleet consists of two 5000 ton "Polaris"class ships and six 7000 ton "Arctic"class ships. All ships were built by the Peene shipyard in Wolgast in accordance with the specifications of the Germanischer Lloyd. This is consistent with "SCANSCOT"s commitment to "Made in Germany" as a guarantee for product quality, and years of experience has indicated that this is extremely important. All ships are multi-purpose freighters with a light draft which enables berthing in smaller ports. However, because of the variable and adjustable decks, roll-on/roll-off items can be stowed just as well as general cargo. The cranes installed at the sides enable the the ship to be independent of the port facilities and to load and unload itself. Finally, the bridge is positioned at the bow of the ship which not only ensures safe steering manoevres, it also protects the valuable deck cargo from wind, weather and waves. This innovative "SCANSCOT" design, like the low draft and the adjustable decks, is just one aspect of "SCANSCOT"s commitment to carefully planned customer service.
