The Seatrans Group is a fully integrated shipping company with in-house chartering and operations, ship management, crewing, and accounting services. The Seatrans Group consists of Seatrans DA as the management company and several shipowning and chartering companies. Group turnover in 2001 was about NOK 950 million (USD 110 million). Seatrans operates 24 vessels of which 16 are under Group ownership. Seatrans has a staff of 45 at its headquarters in Bergen, and employs about 400 shipping personnel from Norway, Poland and the Philippines. History Established in 1971, Seatrans has evolved from the roots of Norwegian maritime culture. For generations, the families of its founders, Wollert Hvide and Bjarne Kyrkjebo, have been involved in seafaring and shipping. Hvide and Kyrkjebo joined forces in 1971, forming the management company Seatrans, with chartering responsibility for 14 vessels ranging from 200 -2,200 dwt. Employing innovative shipping concepts, Seatrans developed close contacts with a number of leading charterers. Within a few years, Seatrans had disposed of all its conventional cargo vessels and opted for side-loading vessels for utilized cargo. Side loading The pioneering project at that time was a series of four 2,700 dwt side-loading vessels for pulp and paper, of which the first, "Trans Sea", was delivered in 1974. This launched a new handling technology for paper and newsprint, providing improved quality, weather protection and performance. The side-loading concept proved a success with Nordic paper mills and became Seatrans" most profitable trade for almost two decades. Transhipment of cars from the import facilities in the Oslofjord area to Northern Norway became the basis for a regular coastal service, which also relied on bagged fertilizers and heavy-lift cargo in return. In addition, smaller side-loaders were employed between the Continent and Northern Norway. Specialisation Seatrans" engagement in the chemical tanker business dates from 1968, when the 200-tonne M/T "Marmorholm" was chartered for shipping sulphuric acid between Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad. With the delivery of "Trans Tind", a purpose-built 1900-tonne tanker, in 1980, a wider trading pattern was established in the North Sea, based on contracts with several charterers. Seatrans has always focused on high quality ship management, and it was one of the first companies to introduce decentralised management on board vessels. The tradition for innovative concepts in cargo-handling and technology has been kept up by development projects. A new generation of vessels was developed in the late 80s with the 5,000-tonne paper carrier manned by a crew of six. Seatrans then developed new tanker concepts with special coatings and also the first chemical carrier with LPG capacity. Market orientation In the 1990s, Seatrans evolved from a contract-based operation to a market-oriented company. A chemical chartering organisation was established and the activities increased by pools and collaboration with Ermefer of Switzerland and AS Sigba, Bergen. The sideloaders were partly replaced by RoRo carriers in the main Finland-Continent trade, but are still in favour in other paper trades. Seatrans has played a leading role in the consolidation of the regular cargo services between Western Norway and the UK/Continent. This included the takeover of Stream Line in 1999 and the merger with Nor-Cargo into Sea-Cargo in 2001. A new generation took over at Seatrans in 1997, with the active partners Johan G Hvide and Lars Helge Kyrkjebo. With a staff of 45, the management company Seatrans DA now operates a fleet of 24 vessels in two main sectors: chemical transportation paper transportation Liner service Sea-Cargo AS was founded on 1st August 2001 through the merging together of the liner activities of Seatrans and Nor Cargo, the two leading shipping lines trading between West Coast of Norway to UK and mainland Europe.
