Malta has provided shipyard services in the commercial sector since the mid 1960s. Recently created Malta Shipyards Ltd is made up of the Cospicua Site (Malta Dry Docks), the Marsa Site (Malta Shipbuilding Company Limited), Manoel Island Yacht Yard Limited and the Malta Shipyards Tank Cleaning Station. Employing over 1700 English speaking, skilled tradesmen the company is one of the largest employers in Malta. Malta Shipyards Ltd offers a substantial range of products to the general maritime, shiprepair, offshore and energy, yachting and conversion sectors from one of the largest facilities in the Mediterranean. Recent successful major projects in the offshore sector include the completion of the M.T. Northia to the FPSO Ikdam and refits to two semi-submersible oilrigs for Transocean. The capability of the company has been further demonstrated with the second refit in Malta during 2003 of the USS La Salle, flagship of the US Mediterranean based 6th Fleet.
