The past of Taichung Harbor The Taichung harbor located in Wu-Chi, Taichung County, East longitude 120o 29' 27.3", and North latitude24o 17' 43". The previous name of Wu-Chi was "Dian Bai-ah Kang". Most of the residents have historically made their living through fishing, so the nickname is "Mong Goh Liao", and since it is located to the west of Ao-Feng Mountain, is called "Ao-Sai". In 1891 the local residents had a meeting and changed the name to "Wu-Chi". In 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan after the Sino-Japanese War and in 1938, Japan began to plan construction at Taichung Harbor, calling it "New Kao Port". In 1944 the construction plan was put on hold due to Japan's loss in World War II. In the early sixties, the R.O.C. government enthusiastically promoted the economy and the expansion of international trade, resulting in a dramatic increase in imports and exports. This caused the Keelung and Kaohsiung ports to become congested with shipping traffic. As the government recognized the fast growth of international trade, work commenced on construction at the port to expand in order to meet the new requirements. In August of 1968 investigation and research was begun regarding the new port's location, and was finished in July 1969. The report recommended the administration office regulate the Taichung harbor as a new international port, synthesizing business, industry and fishing purposes. The construction office of Taichung harbor was set up on Feb 1, 1971, and the first stone was laid by the north dike on Oct 31, 1973. This step was the beginning of the construction process for the Port of Taichung. Port of Taichung Today The boundaries of the Port of Taichung are thus: The northern boundary is the south beach of Ta-Chia stream, the southern boundary is the north beach of Ta-Tu stream, eastern boundary is Ling Kung Road, and western boundary is the Taiwan Strait. The length of the port is 15 KM, width is 2.5 ~ 3.5 KM, the area is 5003.38 hectares, among them the land area is 4024 hectares, and the water area is 1004 hectares; this includes three parts to execute the construction of business port, industrial port and fishing port. There are three parts of the first construction plan. The first part of the construction began on Oct 31 1973, and was finished on Oct 31 1976. The second and the third parts of the construction plan were finished in June 1973. Due to the fast increase in business volume, the secondary construction plan was done in cooperation with Taiwan Construction in order to meet the expanding requirements of the port. There are forty running wharves, consisting of eight container wharves, seventeen general cargo wharves, two bulk cargo wharves, five liquid wharves, three cement wharves, two grain wharves, two coal wharves and one waste steel wharves. There are many different warehouses which include fourteen miscellaneous goods warehouses, twenty current silos, eight good yards, three container yards, 224 liquid tanks. The Port of Taichung provides a good investment environment; most of the warehouse businesses are open to private investment companies. The Port of Taichung has fully automatic equipment for warehouse operations, with high efficiency standards. So far, there are 36 investment companies supporting the Port of Taichung, with an investment amount of about 3 trillion NT dollars. Shipping Liners & Agents: ?
